Workforce communications

As indicated previously, PSM information and messages have different values for different audiences. Your company s workforce has a more immediate and specific interest in the initiative than people who are less directly affected, such as plant neighbors, shareholders, or the general public. This doesn t mean confining communications efforts solely to company employees it simply suggests that you organize communications priorities to reflect levels of interest and information needs. [Pg.29]

Responsibility for the safe transportation of chemicals rests with the chemical producers and their workforce, any haulier used and, to some extent, the customer (e.g. during offloading), as summarized in Figure 12.2. Effective communication is crucial between all relevant parties. Various regulations, codes of practice and guidelines cover the labelling of containers and vehicles to identify the substances and their hazards in an emergency. [Pg.323]

It is intended that this review will present for appraisal the chemistry and biochemistry of the actinides to a scientific community which is much larger than the few hundred or so chemists, biochemists and biologists who currently make up the present workforce. It is hoped that it will generate a crossfertilisation of ideas from pharmaceutical research in industry and university research in general, two areas which are noticeably absent from the current research programmes concerned with actinides. [Pg.44]

This book is organized in seven major chapters. The first chapter addresses the historical presence of African Americans in the chemistry community. The second chapter discusses the demographic characteristics of the responding chemists. The third focuses on the interviewees educational experiences. The fourth chapter discusses workforce-related issues. The fifth chapter discusses professional activities, while the sixth chapter focuses on racial attitudes. The final chapter discusses the implications of the findings for policy and research. [Pg.196]

Zimmerman devoted the final portion of her talk to the intellectual pipeline of people. Zimmerman feels that this is the time to embark on the issues of ethnic and gender diversity in the workforce. If this issue is addressed now, when sustainability has the attention of the scientific community, we can gain the benefit of a diverse workforce that is engaged in and trained in sustainability. [Pg.32]

Women in the chemical workforce was identified as a workshop topic by the CSR in response to broad concerns in the chemical sciences community about underutilization of women in chemistry and chemical engineering. To provide a forum for exploring these concerns, a workshop was planned for May 2000. [Pg.154]

As highlighted earlier in my talk, P G is committed to building a diverse workforce, and our R D community is no exception. However, our ability to attract and hire the best minority scientists is directly impacted by the fact that the number of minority candidates with advanced science degrees is woefully small. P G cannot immediately or directly fill this academic pipeline, but we can help by providing a demand for such candidates, and thus indirectly attract more minority students to pursue science careers. Because all aspects of our education system are potential feeders into this pipeline, we take the opportunity to interact with all phases of education and, in the end, hopefully make a positive difference. [Pg.112]

Diversity enlarges the very notion of customer. Employers cannot help seeing the increasing diversity of their customer base. Customers want products and services designed by companies that understand their needs and respect their diversity. Who can do this better than employees with links to their communities and cultures It seems inescapable that any company whose customers live in different cultures and different nations ought to have a workforce that is a microcosm of the world it seeks to serve. Companies have come to realize that you can sell only in the language of the customer. [Pg.125]

Additionally, during emergency response activities, staff needs to be provided with a method to communicate with their families. It is most difficult for staff to concentrate on an emergency response functional role while worrying about the safety of their family. Making provisions for family communication will result in a more focused workforce for response activities. [Pg.150]

Health systems researchers and public health experts need to address the requirement for rapid assessments of health care infrastructure that quickly identifies the status of the critical assets for providing care (facilities, medical supplies, and the workforce) during a disaster. Natural disasters are not predictable and there are rarely more than a few days warning of an impending event. Time does not allow for testing and retesting of tools or analysis of definitions and measures, and therefore they must be established in advance. Because needs assessments should be done as rapidly as possible it leaves little time for refining the processes. Further, the uniqueness of each disaster complicates research because of the variable populations, socioeconomic status, health care availability, and environmental conditions in every community. [Pg.564]

Recognize the need for the continued development of a public health nursing workforce as the best way to assure compassionate, competent care of disaster victims, theirfamilies, and the community-at-large. [Pg.588]

The current increase in the need for public health services comes at a time when the national public health infrastructure has been weakened by years of financial neglect. While the public health workforce has always provided for community disasters, the level of preparedness called for by the terrorist attacks on 9/11 necessitates training on a new and different level. The times in which we now live make it imperative that public health nursing keep pace with the demand for skills in the disaster and emergency response arenas. [Pg.591]

These standards also target highly hazardous chemicals and radioactive substances that have the potential to cause catastrophic incidents. This standard as a whole is to help employees in their efforts to prevent or mitigate the episodic chemical releases that could lead to a catastrophe in the workplace, and the possibility of the surrovmding community to control these types of hazards. Employers must develop the necessary expertise, experience, judgment, and proactive initiative within their workforce to properly implement and maintain an... [Pg.15]
