Minority candidates

IV motion of minority candidates in both the workplace and in colleges and universities. President Lyndon Johnson, speaking at Howard University in 1965, apdy explained the reasoning behind affirmative action. As he said, You do not take a man who, for years, has been hobbled by chains and liberate him, bring him to the starting line in... [Pg.259]

As highlighted earlier in my talk, P G is committed to building a diverse workforce, and our R D community is no exception. However, our ability to attract and hire the best minority scientists is directly impacted by the fact that the number of minority candidates with advanced science degrees is woefully small. P G cannot immediately or directly fill this academic pipeline, but we can help by providing a demand for such candidates, and thus indirectly attract more minority students to pursue science careers. Because all aspects of our education system are potential feeders into this pipeline, we take the opportunity to interact with all phases of education and, in the end, hopefully make a positive difference. [Pg.112]

There is currently much discussion about how few women and minorities are on chemistry and chemical engineering faculties, especially in the top 50 departments. Every large company I know seeks to identify and attract minority candidates early. Some who are completing their doctoral programs we first knew as college sophomores. One wonders how many more minority chemists and chemical engineers would opt for academic careers if universities tracked them as avidly as companies do. [Pg.129]

When the examination results showed that white candidates had outperformed minority candidates, the mayor and other local politicians opened a public debate that turned rancorous. Some firefighters argued the tests should be discarded because the results showed the tests to be discriminatory. They threatened a discrimination lawsuit if the City made promotions based on the tests. Other firefighters said the exams were neutral and fair. And they, in turn, threatened a discrimination lawsuit if the City, relying on the statistical racial disparity, ignored the test results and denied promotions to the candidates who had performed well. In the end the City took the side of those who protested the test results. It threw out the examinations. [Pg.11]

The City, all agree, was faced with a prima facie case of disparate-impact liability, ante, at 2677 The pass rate for minority candidates was half the rate for nonminority candidates, and virtually no minority candidates would have been eligible for promotion had the exam results been certified. Alerted to this stark disparity, the CSB heard expert and lay testimony, presented at public hearings, in an endeavor to ascertain whether the exams were fair and consistent with business necessity. Its investigation revealed grave cause for concern about the exam process itself and the City s failure to consider alternative selection devices. [Pg.53]

Absence from the first developmental stages as in whales and some Old World monkeys suggests that functional substitution is provided by other nasal chemoreceptors. The ganglia and fibres of the terminal nerve system (N. terminalis, Fig. 2.9) are the principal candidate (Wirsig and Leonard, 1987). The role of the trigeminal input, although a minor sensor, could well be expanded in a limited capacity (Tucker, 1971 Wysocki and Meredith, 1987 Westhofen, 1987). [Pg.12]

A wide variety of proof-of-principle systems have been proposed, synthesized and studied in the field of molecular spin qubits. In fact, due to the fast development of the field, several chemical quantum computation reviews using magnetic molecules as spin qubits have been published over the past decade, covering both experimental and theoretical results [67-69]. Only in a minority of experiments implementing non-trivial one- or two-qubit gates has been carried out, so in this aspect this family is clearly not yet competitive with other hardware candidates.1 Of course, the main interest of the molecular approach that makes it qualitatively different is that molecules can be chemically engineered to tailor their properties and acquire new functionalities. [Pg.51]

No further action may be preferable to natural attenuation in certain instances. Very low risk situations may be better served by no further action since it eliminates the need for continued monitoring and further documentation. Sites with low levels of contaminants or nondiscemible plumes may be better candidates for no further action. Furthermore, very minor releases of hydrocarbons to the subsurface may not be sufficient to support bioremediation. Alternatively, sites with elevated levels of contaminants in nonpotable aquifers may be better addressed through conduct of a risk assessment. [Pg.411]

Based on the evaluation of the screening results, a candidate method is identified and will be optimized. This method is selected on the basis of its being able to monitor all components of interest. It is additionally ideal that no minor peaks elute in close proximity before and after the API. [Pg.156]
