Wool scouring soaps

Alkaline Wool Scouring — Alkaline wool scouring may be used in place of neutral scouring. In alkaline scouring, soda ash is added to the wash water and subsequently combines with a portion of the wool grease to form namral soap. This procedure reduces the amount of detergent required and reduces the BOD and the concentration of residual surface-active agents. 

A neutral olive-oil soft soap is undoubtedly the best for the purpose of wool scouring, as, owing to its ready solubility in water, it quickly penetrates the fibres, is easily washed out, and produces a good feel" so essential in the best goods, and tends to preserve the lustre and pliability of the fibre. 

An MG latex has been suggested as an adhesive for bonding a woven synthetic fabric such as polyester to EPDM. It was necessaiy to clean the surface of the EPDM by solvent or scouring using wire wool and soap solution. A wet bonding technique with MGIO latex gave the best results with cohesive failure in the EPDM.

Fastness against milling, (a) Neutral milling The sample is made into a skein with an equal quantity of white wool or cotton and treated at 300 C. in a bath (40 times the weight of the sample) containing 20 grams of Marseilles soap per litre of distilled water it is scoured with the hands in the liquid, left in the bath for 2 horns, washed and dried. 

Other coco-based surfactants are sulfosuccinates formed by the reaction of coco fatty alcohol with maleic anhydride and further reaction with sodium sulfite or bisulfite. This product possesses good foaming properties, is compatible with soap, and is a good lime dispersant. It is used in toilet soap formulation, shampoos, hand cleaning pastes, and for scouring raw wool. Its ether variant, with 2-4 moles ethylene oxide, forms intense, finely structured foam and is used in combination with ether sulfate in baby shampoos and bath preparations. 

Some of the commercial uses which the machine suggests are the recovery of oil from soap stock, the dehydration of crude petroleum and emulsions, the separation of amorphous wax from cylinder stock and the recovery of wool grease from waste scouring liquors. A brief description of the last application will make the commercial use of the machine plain.
