Soap solution

Commercially, soap is most commonly produced through either the direct saponification of fats and oils with caustic or the hydrolysis of fats and oils to fatty acids followed by stoichiometric (equal molar) neutralization with caustic. Both of these approaches yield workable soap in the form of concentrated soap solutions (- 70% soap). This concentration of soap is the target on account of the aqueous-phase properties of soap as well as practical limitations resulting from these properties. Hence, before discussing the commercial manufacturing of soap, it is imperative to understand the phase properties of soap. [Pg.151]

Oxalate Acid Number. A metal soap solution is treated with a measured excess of organic acid. Potassium oxalate solution is added to precipitate the metal and the total sample is back-titrated with alkaU to determine its acidity. Acidity is expressed ia acid number units, equivalent to mg KOH per g. A neutral soap gives a 2ero acid number, an acidic soap solution a positive acid number, and a basic soap solution a negative acid number. [Pg.220]

Styrene—Butadiene Rubber (SBR). This is the most important synthetic mbber and represents more than half of all synthetic mbber production (Table 3) (see Styrene-butadiene rubber). It is a copolymer of 1,3-butadiene, CH2=CH—CH=CH2, and styrene, CgH5CH=CH2, and is a descendant of the original Buna S first produced in Germany during the 1930s. The polymerization is carried out in an emulsion system where a mixture of the two monomers is mixed with a soap solution containing the necessary catalysts (initiators). Berkman and Egloff explain that some additives increase the flexi-bihty or toughness of bubble walls, rather than their viscosity, to render them more durable. They cite as illustrations the addition of small quantities of soap to saponin solutions or of glycerin to soap solution to yield much more stable foam. Cresylic acid is mainly used as degreasing agent and as a disinfectant of a stabilized emulsion in a soap solution. Cresols are used as flotation agents and as wire enamel solvents. Tricresyl phosphates are produced from a mixture of cresols and phosphorous oxychloride. The esters are plasticizers for vinyl chloride polymers. Clear soluble fluids. Cresol is a mixture of o-, m- and p-methyl phenol (Fig. 10.7A). Because of its poor solubility, it is solubilized with a soap prepared fiom linseed oil and potassium hydroxide. Many derivatives of phenol are now made by a synthetic process. Homologous series of substituted derivatives have been prepared and tested for antimicrobial activity. A combination of alkyl substitution and halogenation has produced useful derivatives including clorinated phenols which are constituents of a number of proprietary disinfectants. Two ofthe most widely used derivatives are/ -chloro-m-cresol (4-chloro-3-methylphenol, chlorocresol, Fig. 10.7C) which is mostly employed as a preservative at a concentration of 0.1%, and / -chloro-m-xylenol (4-chloro-3,5-dimethylphenol, chloroxylenol. Fig. 10.7C) which is used for skin disinfection, although less than formerly. Chloroxylenol is sparingly soluble in water and must be solubihzed, for example in a suitable soap solution in conjunction with terpineol or pine oil. Its antimicrobial capacity is weak and is reduced by the presence of organic matter. [Pg.224]
