What It Is Not

Because the term architecture is often used quite loosely, let us start with what it is not. 

Although too long to reproduce in full, I have extracted excerpts from my summary report, hoping they will clarify what BZ is as well as what it is not. The following description is lengthy, but the term BZ has been loosely bandied about so often in discussions of chemical warfare (frequently in a sensationalistic manner, and usually quite inaccurately), that a full description seems necessary to correct some erroneous impressions.

Having attempted to delineate what this book is, it may be well to remind the reader what it is not. As outlined in Figure 6.1, for today s supply chain leaders, the definition of supply chain excellence is all over the map. Thus, LLRW is defined more by what it is not than by what it is, that is, LLRW is defined by exclusion. LLRW is radioactive waste that is not HLRW, TRU waste, SNF, or byproduct material (commonly referred to as uranium mill tailings). All of these have separate legal definitions. Naturally occurring radioactive material and technologically enhanced NORM are also defined separately from LLRW but are not currently regulated under federal statute. 

The above summarizes what the textbook is now a few notes about what it is not. It is not meant to be a textbook in forensic toxicology, an enormous subject in which there are many fine books to choose from. Rather, the intent is to introduce this topic eis a major aspect of forensic analytical chemistry. Nor is the book meant to cover advanced aspects of all the many forensic chemistry areas, each of which (glass, soils, fibers, paints, inks, drugs, and so on) have been addressed in specialized volumes. Having read this text, you will have the back-groimd to tackle these more advanced treatments. 

In his metabolic theory of labour and value, Marx excluded the non-human from his definition of human labour. For Marx, labour was an expression of man s metabolic relation with and conversion of nature . Yet this labour is notable not just for its assumed conversion of nature into resource, but also for what it is not. Non-human work does not constitute labour, Marx argues, since nature s work whether the web of the spider or the hive of the bee -has not undergone a prior mental conception that would, for instance, characterize the labour of an architect conceptualizing a building (Marx 1990 283 84). The exclusion of non-human work from theories of labour informs the types of material politics that are possible, since non-humans may not then be recognized as participants in our material lives.

An early passage in The Castle tells of K. s serious acceptance of the quest and stru le for admission to the Castle So the Castle had named him Land Surveyor. On the one hand that was not favourable to him, for it showed that the Castle knew everything about him that was necessary to know, had gauged the power relations, and was taking up the struggle with a smile (C, pp. 185-6 translation modified). Here the metaphor restates the failure of knowledge in approximately these Faustian terms all you know of the spiritual object is what you take it to mean, it is not me. The truth condescends to be known not as it is in itself but in a manner Umited by the capacities of the human subject, a manner that does not allow it to be penetrated or exposed. Truth can be known by the human subject only as what it is not. 

If you want to make sure you find the right book for your needs, you may wish to know what this book is and what it is not. It is not a comprehensive text grounded in theoretical underpinnings. It is not exhaustively referenced. It is not designed to be a completely unbiased review of the world s literature on the subject. At the same time, it is not an overview of cosmetic procedures that describes these in generalities without providing enough specific information to actually permit someone to perform the procedures. And importantly, it is not so heavy that it can serve as a doorstop or a shelf filler. 

Then, too, the question of what inorganic chemistry really means came into play. The very name is somewhat disturbing a discipline defined by negation, by what it is not. As one practitioner of the field comments ... 

Kinetic studies of reactions will not, generally, tell us absolutely what the reaction mechanism is, but they may well tell us what it is not. Compare the two reactions of Figure 8.9. The kinetics of the substitution of bromomethane are second order, while those for tert-butyl bromide are first order. This tells us immediately that the two reactions do not proceed by the same mechanism. In the reaction of tert-butyl bromide, the hydroxyl ion must be involved somewhere, because it is there in the product, but it is not involved in the RDS. Thus, we must conclude that there are at least two steps in this process we are measuring only the rate of the RDS, the kinetic bottleneck. The mechanism proposed is a two-step process, where the RDS is the heterolytic cleavage of the C-Br bond to give a carbocation, which then reacts rapidly with the hydroxyl ion (Figure 8.10). Note that mechanisms may be consistent with experimental data, but such data do not prove ... 

Figure 8.12 illustrates how a product study may not show what a mechanism is, but it can show what it is not. Reaction of the aryl halide with amide anion in liquid ammonia gives two products, in almost exactly equal amounts. This means that the replacement of chloride by an amino group cannot be a direct displacement, as this could give rise to only one of the products observed. In the second example, the stereochemistry of the product shows that it cannot have been produced in a simple one-step process—as this would give rise to a ci5-product. 

Feel Specification—Write a feel specification. Describe, as best as you can, what the desired feel is (and what it is not). Prioritize the various elements of feel. Is color most important Or is it the gloss level Or is it the sense of touch Is sound more important than vibration Or is vibration more important than sound Consider the question— Would I like this part to feel like something I have felt before (because I had a favorable response to the way that thing felt). Treat this feel specification as you would any other project specification.
