Technically, the chemist could avoid the complex glassware apparatus of this procedure for a more crude approach [104]. This report shows some dudes de-methylating an amphetamine with concentrated HCI in a pressure cooker. A similar approach with good yields was also employed in ref. 83 and should work as well or better on guaiacol. Hydroiodic acid or hydrobromic acid will work better than hydrochloric acid but, you know, whatever floats the chemist s boat. To do this the chemist can just plain reflux HI or HBr with the guaiacol for a few hours and process as before or she can use HI, HBr or HCI and place the reactants in a pipe bomb for a few hours. [Pg.210]

Packaging constitutes another significant use and is often a foam-ia-place operation to protect iadustrial equipmeat such as pumps or motors. Furniture articles molded from rigid foam are used in the form of decorative drawer fronts, clock cases, and simulated wooden beams. Flotation for barge repair and sport boats as well as insulation for portable coolers are a few other uses. [Pg.419]

Advanced composites and fiber-reinforced materials are used in sailcloth, speedboat, and other types of boat components, and leisure and commercial fishing gear. A ram id and polyethylene fibers are currentiy used in conveyer belts to collect valuable offshore minerals such as cobalt, uranium, and manganese. Constmction of oil-adsorbing fences made of high performance fabrics is being evaluated in Japan as well as the constmction of other pollution control textile materials for maritime use. For most marine uses, the textile materials must be resistant to biodeterioration and to a variety of aqueous pollutants and environmental conditions. [Pg.73]

In contrast to the 1,4-dithiocin system, 1,4-dioxocin (1) is well-known and has been characterized as an olefinic compound by its spectra as well as its chemical behavior.5-6 The reason why 1,4-dioxocin in contrast to 1.4-dihydro-1.4-diazocine (see Section 1.4.) and 4//-l,4-oxazocinc (sec Section 1.12.), does not qualify as a 107r-aromatic species, is the less pronounced tendency of oxygen atoms for 7t-electron delocalization. An X-ray analysis of the 6-substituted 1,4-dioxocin 2 confirms the presumed nonplanar conformation of the 1,4-dioxocin structural element.9 The eight-membered ring exhibits a twisted boat-chair confirmation. [Pg.562]

Crystal and molecular structures of 2,4,4,6-tetraphenyl-4//-thiopyran-1-oxide (143) and the corresponding 1,1-dioxide 141a were investigated to show the boat conformations of the heterocycles as well as an interesting... [Pg.228]

Boats have been designed and built up to at least 37 x 9 m (120 x 30 ft.) in RP. Plastics have become vital for operating within the sea. In 1965 extensive test were conducted by the U.S. Navy Sealab 11 to assay man s ability to live and work in ocean depths for long periods of time (Fig. 2-56). For forty-five days three groups of ten men each lived fifteen-day periods in a 57 ft. x 12 ft. habitat at a depth of 188 m (205 ft.) one half mile off La Jolla, Calif. Plastic parts as well as other materials were used to provide a highly successful experiment. [Pg.109]

Blue sells. The cocktail market was welted with blue drinks several years ago, and blue is die appeal of recent cognac liqueurs like Hpnotiq and Envy, and blue curaqao. It goes well with club lighting and party-boat socials. [Pg.183]

Mazut or Masutt. Residue of Russian petroleum after distg off benz (1% at 100°, d 0.725 g/cc), gasoline (3% at 120° to 130°, d 0.775 g/cc), and kerosene (27% at 150° to 250°, d 0.83—0.84g/cc). The resulting black, oily residue, resembling crude petroleum in appearance, has a flash pt of about 100° and d 0.878-0.900 g/cc. It was purified by treatment with sulfuric acid. It has been used as a fuel in boilers, locomotives and boats, as well as in some internal comb engines. In the expl industry, its use was confined to some blasting expls, particularly those contg chlorates... [Pg.65]

About 8,000 metric tons of peroxides were consumed in 1972. This consumption was strongly stimulated by the rapid growth in reinforced plastics (Ref 23). The largest volume product is benzoyl peroxide which is used in polystyrene and polyester markets for such items as toys, automobiles, furniture, marine, transportation and mil requirements. Also, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide is used in large volumes to cure (as a catalyst) styrene-unsatur-ated polyester adhesive resins used in mil ammo adhesive applications, as well as in glass fiber reinforced plastic products such as boats, shower stalls, tub components, automobile bodies, sports equipment, etc. The monoperesters are growing slowly because of some substitution of the peroxydicarbonates and azo compds (Refs 8,9 23)... [Pg.676]

Unsaturated polyester resins based on maleic anhydride are widely used in coatings to manufacture boat hulls and truck caps and a variety of other uses where a smooth, weatherproof, hard-surfaced material is desired. Because these resin types are inherently brittle, hberglass is frequently added for reinforcement. Consumphon of unsaturated polyesters in the U.S. is well over a billion pounds per year, with about 50% going into construction and the marine industry. [Pg.144]

The mechanism for the reaction catalyzed by cationic palladium complexes (Scheme 24) differs from that proposed for early transition metal complexes, as well as from that suggested for the reaction shown in Eq. 17. For this catalyst system, the alkene substrate inserts into a Pd - Si bond a rather than a Pd-H bond [63]. Hydrosilylation of methylpalladium complex 100 then provides methane and palladium silyl species 112 (Scheme 24). Complex 112 coordinates to and inserts into the least substituted olefin regioselectively and irreversibly to provide 113 after coordination of the second alkene. Insertion into the second alkene through a boat-like transition state leads to trans cyclopentane 114, and o-bond metathesis (or oxidative addition/reductive elimination) leads to the observed trans stereochemistry of product 101a with regeneration of 112 [69]. [Pg.241]

Novel cationic methyl and neutral methyl, chloro Pd11 complexes have been synthesized with various functionalized imidazole ligands. For the first time, structurally characterized examples of this type of Pd complex could be obtained. The chelate ligand is shown to adopt a boat conformation. Inversion of the chelate ring was established by NMR spectroscopy. Depending on electronic and steric features of the ligand, the complexes can act as catalysts in the CO/ethylene as well as the Fleck reaction.186... [Pg.568]

Hydrodynamic cavitation, which generates similar effects as the well established acoustic cavitation, has long being known for its detrimental effects and tackled accordingly. Literature dating back to late nineteenth century report the destruction caused by cavitation in speed boats. English navy, in an attempt to make high... [Pg.69]

We had a farewell word with the Morrises as the boat docked at Staten Island. Mrs. Morris said to me "Well, I suppose you re going back to your home in New York City."... [Pg.352]

The crystal structure determinations of trimetaphosphimates showed that N-H 0 hydrogen bonds between the ring anions play an important role. In most of these salts the (P02NH)lj rings adopt approximately a chair conformation. In a few cases a conformation is found that is best described as a linear combination of the boat and the twist conformation. Examples of these conformations as well as some structural aspects of trimetaphosphimates are given in Fig. 2. [Pg.201]

Fig. 2. Examples of the chair (1) and the distorted boat (2) conformation as well as pairs of trimetaphosphimate ions connected by N-H O hydrogen bonds (3). [Pg.204]
