In addition to JSAs, formal accident management programs are invaluable components of any comprehensive health, safety, and environment (HSE) program. Accident management serves to reduce costs of future accidents by analyzing and improving upon utility processes. A Water Research Foundation (WRF) project. Primary fundings for these investigations were provided by the American Water Works Research Foundation and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Division of Environmental and Biomedical Research. The co-operation and advice of James S. Fritz, Harry J. Svec, Ron Webb, O. Thomas Love, Michael Taras and the various representatives of the fourteen water utilities are gratefully acknowledged. [Pg.98]

Environment Canada licensed Water Technology International Corporation (WTIC) to develop and commercialize a patented self-sealing/self-healing (SS/SH) barrier system (jointly owned by the Netherlands Energy Research Foundation). According to WTIC, the most significant feature of the barrier is its ability to repair itself if it is breached. [Pg.1121]

In a study conducted by the Armour Research Foundation (Ref 41) a-Pb azide crystals wrapped in a thin A1 foil were subjected to fast and thermal neutrons in the heavy water pile at Argonne National Laboratory. With a thermal flux rate of about 10l4n/cm2/sec the crystals were irradiated for 8, 17 and 170 hours. The crystals decompd to a brown powder which was identified as Pb carbonate by X-ray techniques and infrared absorption spectra. From a mass spectrographic analysis of the isotopes of carbon and oxygen in the decompn products, it was determined that the mechanism of carbonate formation is a reaction with the atmosphere by broken surface bands produced by the neutrons. Subsequently, Raney (Ref 60) reported... [Pg.35]
