Water-borne alkyds

Research projects carried out at A F clearly indicate that effective plasticisers for PVC and other resins and binders and additives for alkyd based decorative paints can be based on those raw materials which are the least undisputed from an environmental point of view i.e. renewable resources. These products are not only renewable based but also durable. Provided a positive life cycle analysis, after further R D work plasticisers and high-solid or water borne alkyd paints based on renewables therefore can make an important contribution to a sustainable chemical industry. [Pg.114]

The principal markets for neopentyl glycol (NPG), the hydrogenated, crossed aldol condensation product of isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde, are in water-borne and alkyd-surface coatings. [Pg.380]

ThermoWood is not resistant to exterior weathering and the colour will gradually change to the grey that is characteristic of outdoor exposed wood. In addition, exposure in exterior conditions results in the formation of small cracks on the surface of uncoated wood. Unpigmented or low-build stain coatings do not protect the surface of the wood, but solvent-borne alkyds and water-borne acrylic paints have been found to exhibit better performance than on unmodified wood. VOC emissions from the heat-treated wood are lower compared to unmodified wood and the compositions of the emissions differ. The level of emissions is lower when the wood is treated at a higher temperature. Emissions of terpenes are reduced to very low levels, and the VOC content is dominated by furfural, hexanal and acetic acid (treated at 180 °C), and by acetic acid (treated at 230 °C). ThermoWood passes ecotoxicity tests. [Pg.179]

Some of the paint types belonging to classes such as alkyds, coaltar epoxies, epoxy, heat-resistant, inorganic zinc types, polyurethanes, water-borne coatings as described by Sigma coatings are given in Table 1.29. [Pg.95]

The industry was hard hit in 2003-2004 with higher prices for raw materials such as linseed and soybean oil. Alkyd producers are already developing new water-borne products (73). [Pg.3327]

It is particularly good for colloids, emulsions and particles. Samples separated thus far include lattices, latex aggregates, silica sols, alkyd resins, perfluorocarbon emulsions, milk, carbon particles, hematite, clay, water-borne particles, liposomes, subcellular particles, viruses, and polymerized proteins. [Pg.375]

Other water-borne coatings include water-soluble emulsions, dispersions, and latex resins. Water-soluble resins are rare because most resins derived from vegetable oils are insoluble in water. The true emulsions are based on the emulsification of the oil or alkyd through either the action of a surfactant or a resin that has a surfactantlike character. The alkyd emulsions are readily prepared and can be used for OEM coatings and architectural applications. The submicron size droplets are stabilized by the thickeners (El-Aasser Sudol, 2004 Landfester, 2005 Landfester et al., 2004 Tsavalas et al., 2004 Weissenborn Motiejauskaite, 2000a,b). In dispersions, the resin is a solid and is dispersed in water. The latex resin is usually vinyl acetate, styrene, acrylates, or methacrylates radically copolymerized in a micelle to form particles 0.1 pm in diameter (Bloom et al., 2005 Brister et al., 2000 Jiratumnukul Van De Mark, 2000 Thames et al., 2005). [Pg.584]

Water-based paints are dispersions based on synthetic polymers. Dispersions of polyacrylates are the most common. Examples of these paints include acrylic latex paint, heavy-bodied latex wall paint, latex enamel, latex primer, latex wall paint and sealing water-borne paint. Water-based paints can also contain water-soluble alkyd resin and a mixture of polyacrylate and polyurethane. Although water is the main solvent in these types of paints, comprising about 30-85% weight-to-weight ratio (w/w) of the raw materials, about 10% organic solvents are added to improve the film forming properties of the paint. (Hansen et al. 1987 van Faassen and Borm 1991 Wieslander et al. 1997). The differences between SBP and WBP can be seen in Table 2. [Pg.663]
