Comparison with other materials

Electrica.1 Properties. The bulk electrical properties of the parylenes make them excellent candidates for use in electronic constmction. The dielectric constants and dielectric losses are low and unaffected by absorption of atmospheric water. The dielectric strength is quoted for specimens of 25 p.m thickness because substantially thicker specimens cannot be prepared by VDP. If the value appears to be high in comparison with other materials, however, it should be noted that the usual thickness for such a measurement is 3.18 mm. Dielectric strength declines with the square root of increasing... [Pg.434]

The specimen is mounted in a punch-type shear fixture, and the punch (1 in. diameter) is pushed down at a rate of 0.05 in./min until the moving portion of the sample clears the stationary portion. Shear strength is calculated as the force per area sheared. Shear strength is particularly important in film and sheet products where failures from this type of load may occur (Fig. 2-21). This property can be used for comparison with other materials and for determination of the forces needed for punching openings (holes, etc.). [Pg.312]

Plastics have many advantages. Included are the facts that they have the lowest energy consumption in the recycling processes of about 2 MJ/kg (2 to 2.5 MJ/I) and when incinerated the highest recovery energy content exists of about 42 MJ/kg. Some comparisons with other materials are provided. (1) Processing waste paper requires 6.7 MJ/kg and as a general rule about twice as much paper is needed compared to plastics for... [Pg.370]

The advantage of diamond electrodes - a broad potential window and low background current - is best demonstrated in comparison with other materials commonly used as electrodes, e.g. platinum, glassy carbon, graphite, etc. In addition to Fig. 7, such a comparison is shown in Fig. 9 for diamond and glassy carbon we see that the background current for diamond is an order lower [41]. [Pg.222]

In general, polymers have low stiffness and strength in comparison with other materials, e.g., metals and ceramics, and consequently these materials present serious difficulties in structural applications. To improve their mechanical properties, polymers are reinforced by the addition of rigid particles or fibers to form composite materials (1). Thus, polymer matrix composite materials are made up of a low modulus phase, the polymer matrix, and a high modulus phase, the reinforcement, which is usually carbon or glass. The modulus of the composite is higher than that of the polymer matrix, and the increment is proportional to the volume fraction of the reinforcement. In general, the properties of the composite depend not... [Pg.653]

Due to plastics advantages in comparison with other materials, they have been extensively adopted in food packaging. These advantages are reflected in the physical. [Pg.479]

The influence of some pol5mier surface properties on bacterial attachment to the surface of the elastomeric and thermoplastic samples was shown. As promising materials in this field, butadiene-styrene thermoplastic elastomers (BSTPE) showed average characteristics of bacterial adhesion in comparison with other materials. All materials have passed cytotoxicity test. [Pg.212]

The fact that SPS typically offers weight reduction, in comparison with other materials, is an added benefit for all automotive applications as it helps to improve fuel economy. [Pg.330]

By comparison with other materials, plastics are specifically light substances (densities up to about 2.0 g/cm ). [Pg.25]

All these remarks are very important for appljdng alkali alkaline earth silicate glasses in microdevices. Nevertheless, absolutely regarded in comparison with other materials, also these glasses are chemically resistant. [Pg.34]
