Waste listing basis

To indicate its reason for listing a waste, U.S. EPA assigns a hazard code to each waste listed on the F, K, P, and U lists. These hazard codes are listed below. The last four hazard codes apply to wastes that have been listed because they typically exhibit one of the four regulatory characteristics of hazardous waste. Just because a calculation has found its way into the literature does not, in itself, mean that the result is correct. Over time one builds up a mental list of people whose calculations can be trusted, and the converse. Bear in mind that, commonly, the more distinguished is the senior author, the less likely it is that he/she has had much involvement in running the calculations. Hence risk assessment criteria must be established so that there can be developed a national priority list of the hazardous sites that require remedial action.
