Hurricane Katrina tested Wal-Mart s emergency operations system to its extreme limits. Katrina shut down 126 Wal-Mart stores in the disaster areas. Even though all but 13 were up and running in 2 weeks, it broke Wal-Mart s typical recovery time of one day after a natural disaster. 

Wal-Mart s corporate mantra was to make available day-to-day things to customers efficiently, at competitive prices. During Katrina, Wal-Mart delivered on that promise and more.
