This section includes veterinary applications. The antiviral, bactericidal, and antimicrobial applications of 2-aminothiazoles and 2-imino-4-thiazolines are summarized in Table VI-7. They show a marked anti-trichonomicidal activity, which has even been quantitatively measured by the Hansch approach (797). The antiparasitic action of these compounds has been investigated for some compounds and is summarized in Table VI-8 interesting results were obtained with aminotrozal (1348). [Pg.138]

Veterinary Applications. Another use for antibiotics is for veterinary appHcations and for animal feed supplements to promote growth in Hvestock (see Feeds and feed additives). Feed antibiotics used in the United States far surpass all other agricultural appHcations in terms of kilogram quantities used and approach quantities used in human medicines (25). In 1980 the USA feed antibiotic usage was estimated to be between five and six million kg. The U.S. Council of Agricultural Science and Technology estimates that feed additives save the U.S. consumer approximately 3500 million per year in meat prices, and antibiotic use accounts for most of this. [Pg.476]

Although most biopharmaceuticals approved to date are intended for human use, a number of products destined for veterinary application have also come on the market. One early such example is that of recombinant bovine GH (Somatotrophin), which was approved in the USA in the early 1990s and used to increase milk yields from dairy cattle. Additional examples of approved veterinary biopharmaceuticals include a range of recombinant vaccines and an interferon-based product (Table 1.7). [Pg.8]

Pyrethroids are used primarily for the control of household and agricultural insect pests, and secondarily in industrial, stored product, and veterinary applications. They are especially advantageous for use in northern climates because their toxicity is enhanced at low temperatures (Smith and Stratton 1986). Although it is one of the most potent adjuvant substances known, FCA is too toxic for human use. Some of its reported side effects are listed in Table 10.21. Its toxicity has also precluded its routine veterinary application, although it is sometimes used for experimental purposes. FIA is less toxic than its mycobacterial-containing counterpart. It has found used in the preparation of selected animal vaccines, and was even incorporated into some earlier human vaccines (Table 10.22). Uses Propetamphos is a moderately toxic insecticide. The USEPA has classified it under both GUP and RUP, which suggests the use by certified and qualified applicators. Propetamphos is used for the control of cockroaches, flies, ants, ticks, moths, fleas, and mosquitoes in households and where vector eradication is necessary to protect public health. It also is used in veterinary applications to combat parasites such as ticks, lice, and mites in livestock.
