Vegetation anomaly

In both cases, normal or background variability in the distribution and vigour of various species presents complications that need to be taken into account. Factors such as bedrock geology, soil type, slope, soil moisture and climate can have a more pronounced effect than that due to the presence of hydrocarbons (Rock, 1984 Klusman et al., 1992). Nevertheless, numerous accounts have been published of the detection of hydrocarbon-induced vegetation anomalies by remote sensing.

The results confirm the importance of biotic influences in the control of Au mobilisation in soil. Importantly, the results support the role that vegetation is playing in the formation of Au in calcrete anomalies by creating conditions in the rhizosphere that cause the precipitation of Au.

A mobile ICP-MS has been used for on-site measurements of polluted soils [331]. A rapid digestion procedure was developed in order to reduce sample analysis time for the rapid identification of heavy metal anomalies near a mine dump where no vegetation was growing.

With the exception of three samples, one much leaner and two much richer, all samples in Table VII contained 21 5% bitumen. All bitumens contained 5.7 0.4% sulfur, and most minerals were lighter in color than those in the previous tables. The one lean sample (298) contained both the largest amount of coarse material and the largest amount of sand—anomalies that the presence of coarse vegetal material would account for. Otherwise, all samples fall into only two mineral groups seven with 8 5% sand and five with 20 db 4%.

EPIC has performed a spectrum analysis of the stressed vegetation over several of the anomalies located by the District and has concluded that there are distinct differences in the vegetation chemistry over the anomalies as compared to nearby background locations. The calculation of selectivity values showed that there was discrimination against the incorporation of the deuterated CLA isomers into TAG and CE and a preferential incorporation into PC and phosphatidyl ethanolamine (PE) relative to 9-18 1- /8 and 9, l2-18 2- Q. Comparison of selectivity values for the CLA isomers to r9, l2-18 2- 2 values and values previously reported for c- and r-18 1 positional isomers and 18 0 (17-22) showed that the incorporation of cS,t - and rlO,rl2-CLA matches the r-18 l isomers more than 18 0, 9-18 1, or 9, 12-18 2. This observation is an interesting anomaly since several positive health benefits have been reported for CLA (4), but tram fatty acids (TEA) are considered to have a negative effect on serum cholesterol. Epidemiological studies found a relationship between coronary heart disease risk and dietary intake of TEA from partially hydrated vegetable oils, which mainly contain the t9-, rlO-, and rl 1-18 1 isomers, but no such relationship was found for TEA intake from animal derived foods, whose major TEA isomer is t9-18 1 (vaccenic acid, VA) (19,23,24). 

Fruit and vegetable fiber has been consistently associated with a lower risk of colon cancer, but the relationship with cereal fiber is less clear. However, whole grain cereals appear to be protective—a further anomaly in the relationships between plant foods and disease risk. These discrepancies may be in the process of resolution. First, it seems that the early observational data were confounded by the analytical technologies available, and the perception that native populations consuming unrefined diets had high fiber intakes is incorrect. It seems likely that they ate relatively little fiber but had high intakes of RS. Population studies have shown a protective effect of apparent RS intake and colorectal cancer risk. The word apparent is pivotal because there is currently no accepted method for RS determination and thus, there are no reliable data on dietary intakes. There are also issues regarding the intakes of dietary fiber and cancer risk. Part of the problem inherent in the study of colonic cancer is that, in contrast to CHD (in which there are easily measurable risk markers such as plasma cholesterol that can be modified by diet), the only indices for colon cancer are not easily measurable ...
