Rapidly digested

Mercerized cellulose fibers have improved luster and do not shrink further. One of the main reasons for mercerizing textiles is to improve their receptivity to dyes. This improvement may result more from the dismption of the crystalline regions rather than the partial conversion to a new crystal stmcture. A good example of the fundamental importance of the particular crystal form is the difference in rate of digestion by bacteria. Bacteria from cattle mmen rapidly digest Cellulose I but degrade Cellulose II very slowly (69). Thus aHomorphic form can be an important factor in biochemical reactions of cellulose as well as in some conventional chemical reactions. [Pg.241]

A rapid digestion of vegetable tissue with nitric-perchloric acid mixture was followed by ETAAS using ammonium hydrogen phosphate as matrix modifier. Recovery of Pb was complete at the ppm level with RSD < 4%47. [Pg.435]

Uncatalyzed hydrolysis of a peptide linkage is very slow with f1/2 at neutral pH and 25°C of 300-600 years.189 Both acids and bases catalyze hydrolysis, but enzymes are needed for rapid digestion. The carbonyl group C=0 is highly polarized, with the resonance form C+-0 contributing substantially to its structure. An attack by a base will take place readily on the electrophilic carbon atom. While the reactivity of the carbonyl group in esters and amides is relatively low... [Pg.608]

Yet little if any pectin can he recovered in the stool, due to rapid digestion by bacterial enzymes present in the colon. Breakdown products include galacturonic acid, volatile acids such as formic and acetic, and finally, carbon dioxide and water. Although galacturonic acid is not absorbed by the human ileum or colon, it does not appear in the feces (54). Apparently this acid is further degraded to acetic and formic acids, which have been seen to increase in fecal excretion of subjects fed 30 g of pectin daily. [Pg.119]

Each bomb has a pressure relief valve, which vents into a manifold. This exhausts the acid fumes into a tube, which should be connected to an acidscrubbing trap. The relief valves are set so that the sample is heated under pressure, allowing higher temperatures and more rapid digestion than is possible in an open container. [Pg.234]

A mobile ICP-MS has been used for on-site measurements of polluted soils [331]. A rapid digestion procedure was developed in order to reduce sample analysis time for the rapid identification of heavy metal anomalies near a mine dump where no vegetation was growing. [Pg.135]

Neighboring cells and macrophages rapidly digest these cellular fragments, or apoptotic bodies, without inducing inflammation or damage [46]. Apoptosis is the favored and controlled method of cell death and is vital for many processes such as organogenesis, normal cellular turnover, and the deletion of potentially neoplastic cells [47]. [Pg.77]

When cellulase acts on cellulose, the most susceptible portions are rapidly digested, and the residue becomes increasingly resistant to enzyme action. Cellulases produced on different substrates vary in their ratios of Cx to Ci action (Table IV). We hoped, therefore, that use of the resistant residues remaining after enzyme attack, as a substrate for enzyme production, might result in a preparation having a high activity on resistant cellulose. This would have additional advantages in a prac-... [Pg.410]

Even during longer sprint events, such as 400 m, the race is completed before muscle glycogen stores have become depleted by -50%. If multiple races are to be run, adequate glycogen resynthesis between each event is important, so the consumption of rapidly digested carbohydrate has been shown to be useful for the best performances. [Pg.430]
