Various Forces

The various forms of interaction between a molecule and a surface, which are conveniently (see Sec. IV,I) treated as different forces and were discussed in Sec. V, cooperate with the repulsion forces, dealt with in Sec. IV,4, to create the phenomenon of adsorption. They determine the magnitude of the adsorption energy and the distance between the adsorbed molecule and the surface. [Pg.64]

Nonpolar van der Waals forces and repulsion forces are always present and are, therefore, always among the cooperating forces in every case of adsorption. There are, however, few cases where these two general forces are the only ones that operate. The adsorption of noble gases on nonpolar dielectric surfaces will be governed by these two forces only. In practically all other cases one or more of the other forces of Sec. V will cooperate. We shall, in this section, discuss a few selected cases of such cooperation. [Pg.64]

Mechanical Considerations. The mechanical design of a fan and the various forces that fan parts must withstand are discussed ia Reference 14. The forces result from a combination of fluid, iaertial, and vibrational effects. [Pg.109]

Action of Vacuum on Spacecraft Materials. For service beyond the atmosphere, the vacuum environment allows materials to evaporate or decompose under the action of various forces encountered (1,18,19). These forces include the photons from the sun, charged particles from solar wind, and dust. The action of space environment on materials and spacecraft can be simulated by a source—sink relationship in a vacuum environment. Thus, for example, the lifetime of a solar panel in space operation may be tested (see Photovoltaic cells). [Pg.368]

The stresses imposed by axial deflection are much greater at the hub than at the rim as seen in Figure 18-9. Therefore, to maintain uniform stresses in the diaphragm when all the various forces acting on the diaphragm are at their maximum, the diaphragm must be used to connect the contoured profile at both the hub and the rim to reduce stresses. [Pg.617]

The adhesive macromolecules are adsorbed on to the surface of the substrate and are held by various forces of attraction. The adsorption is usually physical, i.e., due to van der Waals forces. However, hydrogen bond-... [Pg.823]

Thus, the ratios of the various forces occurring in mixing vessels can be expressed as the above dimensionless groups which, in turn, serve as similarity parameters for scale-up of mixing equipment. It can be shown that the existence of geometric and dynamic similarities also ensures kinematic similarity. [Pg.282]

Insofar as paleoenvironmental records reveal histories of both forcings and environments, the accuracy of GCMs may be tested by efforts to replicate these histories. Successful replication would suggest the models capture the essential behavior of the Earth and therefore have predictive ability. Further, GCM simulations of past climates may allow partitioning of net climate changes into components due to various forcings. GCM simulations of the ice-age Earth are very much works in progress. [Pg.493]

DFTB has been combined with various force field programs, including CHARMM [49], Amber [50, 51], SIGMA [52], TINKER [34] and GROMACS (to be published). All these combined methods have used the same strategy for the interface with respect to the treatment of bonding interactions at the interface and non-bonded Coulomb and van der Waals (vdW) terms. The concepts will not be reviewed in detail here, for this purpose we would like to refer to an excellent and extensive recent review [4],... [Pg.177]

Solid particles hydraulically conveyed in a vertical pipe are subjected to various forces which cause them to rotate and move inwards towards the axis of the pipe. The effect is most pronounced with large velocity gradients. [Pg.302]

Groundwater can be found in the traditional sense at the water table below which the soil pore spaces are essentially saturated and the water is free to move, and in the unsaturated zone (or vadose zone) above the water table. It is possible for water to migrate through both of these zones, transporting dissolved components (or contaminants). The interaction of the various forces involved will determine the direction and rate of migration. [Pg.56]

Molecular emissions are due to electronic transitions within the molecule but are modified by variations in bond length. The bond between two atoms assumes a particular length as a result of the various forces acting upon the atoms involved. The attractive forces between the electrons of one atom and the nucleus of the other atom are balanced by the repulsive forces of the like-charges carried by both nuclei. The Morse curve (Figure 2.10) describes... [Pg.46]

These authors have assumed the bubble to be expanding at the orifice, and have used the force balance equation at the time of detachment. The various forces considered by these authors are buoyancy, force due to the addition of mass (P2), excess pressure force, surface tension force, drag force, and force due to the inertia of the liquid. [Pg.304]

AUinger s review (lOd) contains a table of various force fields including performances with various functional groups. This section discusses characteristics of several MM programs based on our own experience. [Pg.121]

Various hybridization states of the phosphorus atom have been parameterized in various force fields (Table 9). If a force field is to be useful for pentacoordinated phosphoranes, the relative energies of the two basic configurations, trigonal bypyramid (62) and square pyramid (63), must be differentiated. For this purpose, a 1,3-non-bonded interaction term centered only at the central phosphorus atom was added to MMI. In this modification, account was ts en of... [Pg.152]

Biogeochemists are working to construct numerical models that include all of these interlinked feedbacks to explain how the chemistry of seawater has changed over time in response to various forces, including tectonism, biological activity, ocean-atmosphere interactions, crustal weathering, and river runoff To incorporate all of these linkages into a numerical multielemental model of seawater is very complex because most of... [Pg.501]

FFF process can be theoretically described because (a) the flow regime inside the channel of well-defined geometry can be mathematically represented (see Equation 12.1), and (b) the tractability of the various force fields employed in the different techniques allows one to describe the analyte concentration profile (see Equation 12.3). The retention ratio expresses the retardation of an analyte zone caused by its interaction with the field, and it is given by the ratio of the average velocity of the analyte zone and the average velocity of the carrier liquid (n) ... [Pg.335]

In a spin-filter based stirred bioreactor, there are various forces acting on both the liquid medium and the cell particles gravity force, axial force due to impeller rotation, centrifugal force created by the spin-filter rotation, and radial force (drag) generated by the perfusion flux. [Pg.148]

The British physicist and mathematician Sir Isaac Newton formulated his laws of motion in the 17th century. These laws predict the course of an object when subjected to various forces, such as a push, pull, or a collision with another object. In Newtonian physics, physicists can predict the motion of an object with any desired degree of accuracy if all the forces acting on it are precisely known. [Pg.20]

When Sir James Hall (1761-1832) read of this work, he recalled his own experiments on the effects of compression in modifying the effects of heat, and concluded that the changes which, with true scientific modesty, he [Hatchett] ascribes to an unknown cause, may have resulted from various heats acting under pressure of various force (19). Sir James subjected the theories of the geologists to the test of chemical experiment and showed that when limestone is heated under pressure, it is not converted into quicklime but into crystalline marble. [Pg.382]

The various forces responsible for physical adsorption were discussed in Chapter 2. These include dispersion as well as coulombic forces. Chemical adsorption arises from the inability of surface atoms to interact symmetrically in the absence of a neighbor above the plane of the surface. For this reason, surface atoms often possess electrons or electron pairs which are available for bond formation. [Pg.198]
