Where the willingness is great, the difficulties cannot be great. 

A unique aspect of the safety and loss prevention area is the vast quantity of free or low-cost services and information available upon reqnest. The key, however, is that the safety and loss prevention professional must be able to identify and locate available services and request further information from specific resonrces. A substantial number of the sources of free services and information are governmental agencies however, other sources, such as trade groups and nniversities, also provide safety and loss prevention services. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, is an exceptional source for health-related informatiou. l.ike NIOSH, the CDC is

Some of these government agencies and private companies, because of the nature of their business, will utilize the services of an analytical chemistry laboratory as part of their overall need to assure the required quality operation. For example, municipal governments will employ the use of an analytical chemistry laboratory to test their water supply on a regular basis to make sure it is free of toxic chemicals. The pharmaceutical company will house an analytical chemistry laboratory within its facility to routinely test the products it produces and the raw materials that go into these products to make certain that they meet the required specifications. WILLARD ( ) is a severe storms forecasting expert system which can obtain all input data from National Weather Service data lines. When severe storm situations occur, forecasters become very busy and do not have time to utilize all the data which is available. The expert system can take over the routine portion of the forecasting, leaving the experts free to focus on the more difficult and critical portions of the analysis. 

Most process Raman instruments have few, if any, moving parts and thus are quite stable and robust. This reduces the number of parts likely to need replacement. The laser and detector shutter are the most common service items. Special utilities and consumables are not required. Proper enclosure selection allows instruments to survive harsh environments, such as installation outdoors or around vibrations. An instrument built to accurate specifications and well installed is unlikely to require much care or daily attention. However, it is important to remember that there is no such thing as a maintenance-free instrument. Limited additional maintenance will ensure robust performance for years. 

As citizens of the modem world and as consumers in a comfortable society, we have come to expect the highest standards of quality in all aspects of our lives. When we buy a new car, we expect that we can drive it for tens of thousands of miles free from defects in workmanship. When we elect our government officials and pay our taxes, we expect a responsive government, schools with high academic standards, air and water free of pollution, and an infrastructure that is solid and in good repair. When we pay our utility bills, we expect to always have electricity, heat, water, and a working sewer system for our homes. A quality lifestyle means excellence in consumer products, environment, health and safety, government services, and so on.

Because NIOSH does not have any compliance enforcement powers, safety and loss prevention professionals should not hesitate to utilize this exceptioual service. The NIOSH is primarily a research institute that has conducted research on virtually any area of interest for a safety and loss prevention professional, from an analysis of fire helmets to the safety aspects of zinc. The NIOSH pnblishes a catalog of all of their publications on a periodic basis and provides a Web site (http //www.cdc.gov/ niosh) that offers information about their services, publications, research, and more (see Figure 11.1). 

Switchgears can serve as main secondary service equipment, as main primary service equipment, and as load center equipment when located near load concentrations. The assembly and its devices provide for the control and distribution of electricity to utilization or subdistribution equipment. Most switchgear manufactured since 1955 has been metal-enclosed, dead-front, free-standing type, with its circuit protective devices enclosed each in its own compartment. For certain types of load applications, the protective devices are group-mounted in separate cubicles instead of individual compartments. 

South Africa.
