Using Amplifiers

We saw in the previous section how hybrids and circulators could be applied to prevent coupling between the elements via the feed cables. Another alternative is simply to connect each element to its own individual amplifier. The load impedances then simply become the input impedances of the amplifiers and the isolation from element to element will be high indeed. Furthermore, this approach has the added advantage that the loss in the feed lines can be alleviated by the 

We saw earUer in Section 2.9.2 that a large uniform aperture backed by a ground-plane was capable of absorbing an incident plane wave entirely, resulting in very low backscattering. Furthermore, we saw in Section 2.11.2 how a tapered aperture always would backscatter unless special precautions are taken. We will discuss these in this section. 

Consider Fig. 2.20, top, where we depict an array where the elements are fed via a simple harness with 3-dB T connectors. Clearly, this will lead to a uniform aperture illumination and consequently to a low backscattering, but only at broadside and certain other angles of incidence as discussed in Section 2.12.1. 

Let us next consider the same array but as shown in Fig. 2.20, middle, this time we feed the elements via a harness with T connectors arranged to give a tapered aperture illumination as indicated by the cross-hatched area. We will now receive less energy in Zl while the excess energy between uniform and tapered illumination will be reradiated, resulting in a high backscatter level.

The majority of the papers cited above under the individual hormones contain experimental details of how to set up and use immunoassays to quantify these hormones in extracts of plant tissue. Additional procedures can be found elsewhere for auxins [102-105], cytokinins [106-108], abscisic acid [109-115] and gibberellins [116-120]. The sensitivity of immunoassays for most of the plant hormones is generally in the pmole range but occasionally, when high affinity antibodies (K3=10 lmol ) are available, analysis is possible at the fmol level. Using amplified ELISA assays sensitivity down to 200 amol (200 x 10 mol) has been claimed for abscisic acid [113].

Even more conveniently, instrumentation amplifiers are also available from a range of semiconductor companies as a single device—a monolithic instrumentation amplifier. There are many such products available from many producers such as the AD624 made by Analog Devices, or as shown in Figure 27.13, the INA121 made by Texas Instruments. This particular device has FET inputs, is available in surface mount and dual in-line packages, and is a versatile, easy-to-use amplifier with wide applicability.

Peak floor displacements in the stmcture under the artificial and natural earthquake records for the four study cases specified above are shown in Figure 5. As it follows from this figure, reduction in peak values of floor displacements under the natural earthquakes were very significant. Using amplifiers allowed reduction of control devices number to 9 and resulted in an effect that was equivalent to that obtained by 21 devices connected to Chevron braces.
