Update methods

As mentioned above, update formulae have been developed to avoid a frequent evaluation of the Hessian matrix. They modify a given matrix by using quantities which have been employed before in the procedure (gradient and quasi-Newton vector). If a matrix (approximating H(x )) is available, then by an update formula a sequence of matrices M may be generated which can be used instead 

Since at each point x the Hessian matrix H(x) is uniquely defined by 

Apart from the quasi-Newton condition we have no further information about M. Thus we should preserve as much as possible of what we already have. This is done by choosing as the solution of the constrained minimization problem 

A formula (procedure), which modifies a given matrix so that the new matrix is a solution of the constrained minimization problem (14), is called a least--change update. The term update will be clear when we consider some updates in detail.

As basing phase II allocation on activities in phase I was discouraged by the EU Directive, some Member States update allocations using output-based fuel-specific benchmarks (FSB), where the benchmark is set higher for coal-fired plants than for gas-fired plants. Here, we assess the impact of this alternative updating method and compare with the output-based uniform benchmark approach.

In this example, the Bayesian model updating method is applied to update the finite-element model of a three-dimensional six-story braced frame, which is based on a model of an actual laboratory test structure. It is square in plan with width a = 5 m. There are four columns for each floor, one at each comer. Each of them have interstory stiffnesses of 10 MN/m and 15 MN/m in the x and y directions, respectively. Furthermore, each face in each floor is stiffened by a brace and its stiffness is taken to be 20 MN/m. As a result, the interstory stiffness is 80 MN/m and 100 MN/m in the x and y directions, respectively. The floor mass is taken to be 10 metric tons for each floor. As a result, the first five modal frequencies of the stmcture are 3.432, 3.837, 6.305, 10.10 and 11.29 Hz. 

In Broyden s update method, the new information is managed independently of the previous one. The point that represents the last Jacobian upgrade is projected onto the new hyperplane. It is evident that the point obtained after the two projections coincides with the intersection of the two lines, that is, the solution of the equation system, only if the two lines are orthogonal to each other. 

Although more complex, the Barnes updating method seems superior to Broyden s since it allows a more accurate estimation of the Jacobian. The Barnes s method also allows the estimation of the Jacobian in nv iterations in the linear case.
