Target lists

The U.S. government is also focused on the risk posed by attacks on industrial chemical facilities [53]. According to Massachusetts s representative, Edward Markey, Chemical facilities are at the top of the terrorists target list [14]. However, because attacks on these facilities are more likely to result in a known release of a defined chemical entity, sensors are less important than situations where either the chemical release goes undetected or where an unknown substance is released. 

Two methods, EPA SW-846 8015 and 8015A, were, in the past, often quoted as the source of gas chromatography-based methods for measurement of the total petroleum hydrocarbons in a sample. However, the original methods were developed for nonhalogenated volatile organic compounds and were designed to measure a short target list of chemical solvents rather than petroleum hydrocarbons. Thus, because there was no universal method for total petroleum hydrocarbons, there were many variations of these methods. Recently, an updated method... 

Samples are analysed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This instmment separates the organic hydrocarbons in the extract with a very high resolution fused silica capillary column prior to mass spectrometric detection. Acquisition parameters have been customized to detect the target list of 162 hydrocarbons with the sensitivity required to obtain 1 part-per-trillion reporting limits which represents an innovation in these analytics. 

Once a targeted list is assembled, the appropriate LC-MS instrument can be set up to acquire both MS and MS/MS data (or MS" data for traps) in an automated fashion. The MS/MS acquisitions would only be triggered by detection of a targeted precursor ion (from the list) at a minimum specified intensity. Linear ion trap quadrupole instruments are increasingly popular for this type of work (Hopfgartner and Zell, 2005) and are discussed in Chapter 3 of this book. 

When a targeted list is not used to drive the process, analysis may be conducted to assess all metabolites present. The observed m/z is compared with all possible elemental compositions that could produce the observed value, within constraints imposed by the user as described below. Accuracy and precision in the m/z measurement become critical in limiting the possible compositions to the greatest extent possible, greatly simplifying data reduction (Grange and Sovocool, 2008 Ruan et al., 2008). These techniques are discussed in Chapters 4 and 5. 

This section will cover some of the less popular analytes for which guani-dinium-based receptors have been reported. These analytes include flavins, nitronates, carbonates, sulfates, squarates, and lactones. Some of the receptors discussed above have been used to study these analytes as well however, their primary purpose was for recognition of the targets listed above. For instance, even though the first report of receptor 43 dealt with monitoring the induced helicity upon binding of sulfate counterions, the purpose of the design was to bind helical biomacromolecules.

The system as defined is also flexible with respect to future development in incorporating presently excluded options. Since all possible target /-lists are not produced by the self-consistent sequences of the lists, there must be occasions which demand refunctionalization. At present these are assumed to occur at the end of the route, following full skeletal construction, but it is equally efficient and more flexible to allow them en route as well. It is possible to systematize refunctionalization in the same format as constructions (cf.. Table 3), perhaps including the Z - Z reactions implicit in the present sequences With this added tool the self-consistency criterion could be made less inflexible by allowing certain specified refunctionalizations to intervene among constructions, with a view to exploring the expansion of options this will produce. 

Before you make calls, brainstorm and make a target list. A target list contains the names of the people you know who might help you get a job in the field in which you are interested. 

Remember that your target list is not for one-time use. Keep it alive and active by constantly adding names. It s not unusual to have as many as 75 contacts at one time, but don t feel daunted if you have only six people in your network. By the time you finish brainstorming with family and friends, that number might jump to 30 or more. 

Now that you have a target list, analyze it carefully. If you know the industry or field in which you want to work, prioritize your list Determine where the greatest opportunities for employment are and check off those names first. 

Networking is also about visibility—getting yourself out there. If you learn about an actual job opening through your target list, you are ready to start interviewing. (Chapter 5 has more specific information about the interview itself.) Whatever you decide, think carefully about what you want to say and the questions you d like to ask. Then write them down. 

Okay, you ve thought about what you want to ask—you know what you want to know about—and you re feeling confident. Now s the time to pick up the phone and call someone on your target list. You will be surprised how well things go, especially if you ve thought about what you want to say. Once you ve introduced yourself, you can get into the purpose of your call.
