Generic Assessment

Figure 4-1 displays the components for a generic assessment framework. Within this framework, there are several tools and methods that can be applied to baseline PSM assessments, which are discussed in this chapter. Regaidless of the assessment method selected, it s useful to keep in mind the following general principles ... 

Regional climate should be the first consideration when evaluating the suitability of an alternative landfill cover for a site. If the regional climate appears to be compatible with the requirements of the alternative cover, then site characteristics should be examined to determine whether the site climate is also suitable. Site and regional climate may differ substantially for sites near mountains, in valleys, in the rain shadow of coastal mountains, or near the coast. The Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence commissioned a generic assessment of the suitability of the ET landfill cover based on regional climate for the continental United States.4... 

Methods for evaluating the performance and utility of uncertainty analysis in the context of probabilistic pesticide assessments are needed. This should include comparisons between assessment outputs and existing field data (e.g., avian field studies) to evaluate whether decision makers can rely on the assessment methods. Consideration should also be given to existing field data to refine generic assessment models, using Bayesian updating methods. 

Thus, for purposes of waste classification, it appears possible to assess the risk from the intrusion and atmospheric release pathways at a generic hazardous waste disposal site. However, a generic assessment of risk from the water release pathway normally would incorporate assumptions that would be extremely conservative for many sites (e.g., the amount of water infiltration and travel times of hazardous substances to a nearby well).

When appropriate, generic assessment measures should be used to develop methods to evaluate overall patient outcomes after pharmacists interventions. There are assessments produced once only for a given activity or type of workplace. In cases where an organisation has several locations or situations where the same activity is undertaken then a generic risk assessment could be carried out for a specific activity to cover all locations. Similarly, where operators work away from the main location and undertake a specific task, e.g. installation of telephones or servicing of equipment, a generic assess-... 

Schedule 1 to the Regulations specifies four inter-related factors of which the assessment should take account (the task, the load, the working environment and the individual s capabilities) and further questions relating to each are also identified in the Schedule. Consideration of these factors forms the basis of an appropriate assessment, some of which can be done in advance in a general way by means of generic assessments.

On each site the generic assessment overleaf must be reviewed to ensure that all significant hazards and their risks are Identified and controlled. 

The principal party may also perform a generic assessment, making use of prior experience with the use of similar sources. Such an approach would be appropriate when the principal party already has authorization for several similar sources on the site, but it may still need to be supplemented by additional information on specific issues relating to the location.
