Table 15.4 shows typical applications for the range of oil fuels for use with major prime movers. Medium/high-speed diesel engines generally use distillate fuel oils while medium/low-speed units generally bum residual fuels. The gas turbine, which normally operates on liquid distillate fuels, is capable of running on residual fuels, although examples of these are normally associated with crude production facilities. 

Besides the ASTM standard tests, a number of general reference books have been published on testing and on the mechanical properties of polymers and viscoelastic materials (2-7). Unfortunately, a great variety of units are used in reporting values of mechanical tests. Stresses, moduli of elasticity, and other properties are given in such units as MK.S (SI), cgs, and English units. A table of conversion factors is given in Appendix II.

As in the case of nylons, the flexibility of PUs is increased as the number of methylene groups is increased, and the rigidity is related to the number of stiffening groups, such as phenylene groups in the chain. As the number of methylene units increases (Table 14.6), the Tm decreases. The Tm generally increases as the flexible units are replaced by nonflexible units, such as phen-ylenes and piperazines. Thermal and physical properties of aliphatic PUs are shown in Table 14.7. 

All stages of these polyimide syntheses proceeded homogeneously and led to the formation of organo-soluble polyimides free (infrared spectroscopy) of noncyclised units. General properties of the organo-soluble methyl- and N-phthalirnide-substituted polyimides are given in Table 5.11.

Several companies supply density equipment which was considered suitable for automatic, continuous operation with sufficient precision for calculation of polymerization conversion. These break down into three classes based on mode of operation y-ray absorption, oscillatory frequency of a sample filled tube, and mass measurement at fixed volume. The following table gives the variation of (2.3026 RT/F) (mV) with temperature (°C). Electronic pFl meters are voltmeters with scale divisions that are equivalent to the value of 2.3026 RT/F (in mV) per pH unit. Generally, a reproducibility of 0.005 pH unit is feasible when the pH meter is reproducible to 0.2 mV.

Standards for aqueous effluent from refineries have been set, both in Canada and the United States (Table 18.9). For parameters, such as total suspended solids, oil, grease, and ammonia nitrogen, American standards appear to be more strict than Canadian federal standards. Also provincial standards in Canada are generally more restrictive than the federal standards, perhaps because of the more numerous very large refineries operating in the United States. 

Since the concentration of SM-C/IGF-I has traditionally been expressed in U/ml, with I U/ml arbitrarily defined as the activity in a pool of normal adult plasma, it has been difficult to compare in absolute terms the values obtained in different laboratories. As purified peptides have become available, it is now possible to express both SM-C/IGF-I and IGF-II in mass units, generally ng/ml. In a number of laboratories which report in mass units or provide conversion foctors between U/ml and ng/ml, the level of SM-C/IGF-I in apparently healthy adults is generally about 200-300 ng/ml, although some laboratories have reported different mean values in different studies. Some typical mean values and ranges (either presented as published or calculated from data provided) are shown in Table 2. In recent years reference ranges for IGF-II have also become established. As seen in Table 2, mean values are 2 to 3 times higher than for SM-C/IGF-I. 

Electric Power. Power requirements for process equipment and motors in specific chemical industries are summarized in Fig. 6-34. To allow for line losses and contingencies, these data should be multiplied by 1.11 to 1.25. The industrial power rates vary regionally and locally in the United States. It is generally observed that as longer spacer units are introduced, the Tg of the polymer is lowered by internal plasticization and the tendency for the more ordered smectic phase to develop is increased. A similar ordering effect is also encouraged by lengthening the alkyl tail unit (see Table 5.7). Both these phenomena reflect the known tendency for long side chain to order and eventually to crystallize, when sufficiently long, and this condition persists also in the liquid crystal state. 

As a rule the nomenclature recommended by lUPAC has been followed. But compound names are largely avoided since many of the compounds are only presented in tables and identified by their formulas. Much of their data in the tables occurs in abbreviated form without units general explanations are given on p. XI.
