Minor Effects

Section VI shows the power of the modulus-phase formalism and is included in this chapter partly for methodological purposes. In this formalism, the equations of continuity and the Hamilton-Jacobi equations can be naturally derived in both the nonrelativistic and the relativistic (Dirac) theories of the electron. It is shown that in the four-component (spinor) theory of electrons, the two exha components in the spinor wave function will have only a minor effect on the topological phase, provided certain conditions are met (nearly nonrelativistic velocities and external fields that are not excessively large). 

Environmental impact studies on NE have been performed. Although undiluted NE inhibits seed growth, no effect on plant growth was observed when exposed to 6, 000 ppm-min of NE and only minor effects were observed at the 60, 000 ppm-min exposure level (41). Exposure of microbial populations to 25% NE in air for seven hours showed normal growth. NE is not an o2one-depleting gas (20). 

Soluble analogues of these difunctional initiators have been prepared either by addition of small amounts of weakly basic additives such as triethylamine (73) or anisole (74) which have relatively minor effects on diene microstmcture (37). Another method to solubilize these initiators is to use a seeding technique, whereby small amounts of diene monomer are added to form a hydrocarbon-soluble, oligomeric dilithium-initiating species (69,75). 

Similar mechanical data for a series of ionomers derived from a single ethylene—acryflc acid copolymer have appeared (13) (Table 3). Comparison of the data from Tables 2 and 3 shows that the substitution of acryflc acid for methacrylic acid has only minor effects on properties. 

Droplet size, particularly at high velocities, is controlled primarily by the relative velocity between liquid and air and in part by fuel viscosity and density (7). Surface tension has a minor effect. Minimum droplet size is achieved when the nozzle is designed to provide maximum physical contact between air and fuel. Hence primary air is introduced within the nozzle to provide both swid and shearing forces. Vaporization time is characteristically related to the square of droplet diameter and is inversely proportional to pressure drop across the atomizer (7). 

Surfa.cta.nt, The primary purpose of a surfactant in toothpaste is to create a foam while the teeth are bmshed. This foam provides an enjoyable sensation. Secondarily, the surfactant helps remove material dislodged by the toothbmsh, and it may have minor effects on plaque accumulation (see Surfactants). 

SuIfona.tlon, The sulfonic acid group is used extensively in the dyes industry for its water-solubilizing properties, and for its ability to act as a good leaving group in nucleophilic substitutions. It is used almost exclusively for these purposes since it has only a minor effect on the color of a dye. 

Factors considered to affect pond performance are air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation. Items appearing to have only a minor effect include heat transfer between the earth and the pond, changing temperature and humidity of the air as it traverses the water, and rain. 

There are therefore two ways in which lasers may be used to bring about photon-assisted film formation. If the laser emits radiation in the near-ultra-violet or above, photochemical decomposition occurs in the gas phase and some unabsorbed radiation arrives at the substrate, but this latter should be a minor effect in die thin film formation. This procedure is referred to as photolysis. Alternatively, if the laser emits radiation in the infra-red, and tire photons are only feebly absorbed to raise the rotational energy levels of the gaseous... 

In conclusion, the different thermal histories imposed to PTEB have a minor effect on the /3 and y relaxations, while the a. transition is greatly dependent on the annealing of the samples, being considerably more intense and narrower for the specimen freshly quenched from the melt, which exhibits only a liquid crystalline order. The increase of the storage modulus produced by the aging process confirms the dynamic mechanical results obtained for PDEB [24], a polyester of the same series, as well as the micro-hardness increase [22] (a direct consequence of the modulus rise) with the aging time. 

The impurities likely to be present in nominally pure tin are unlikely to affect its corrosion resistance, except for minor effects on the rate of oxidation in air. Small aluminium contents, however, may result in a severely embrittling intercrystalline attack by water. The addition of antimony counteracts this effect. Although 0-1% magnesium appears to be tolerable, larger amounts produce effects similar to those of aluminium.

Most of the data used for compiling such maps have been obtained for the flow of water and air at near atmospheric temperature and pressure, and scaling factors have been introduced to extend their applicability to other systems. However, beating in mind the diffuse nature of the boundaries between the regimes and the relatively minor effect of...

Extension of the alpha-methyl to an alpha-ethyl abolishes hallucinogenic activity, but has only a minor effect on entactogens. 

Ionic screening has only a minor effect on the voltage dependence of the capacitance for the ionic strengths considered, > 0.01 M. 

Calein A (24) which contains one a, 0-unsaturated ketone, ester and lactone moiety has only minor effects on most seed germinations but strongly inhibits Palmer amaranth (75%) at the 0.05 mM level. 

The dlterpene lactone 17-acetoxyacanthoaustralide (25) has minor effects, showing promotion of clover (112%), cucumber (109%) and Palmer amaranth (111%) and inhibition of carrot germination (91%). The flavonoid artemetin (26) at 0.05 mM concentrations slightly affects onion (93%), oat (91%) and promotes seed germinations In carrot (116%) and Palmer amaranth (113%). In closing, it is noteworthy to point out that lettuce and cress are not significantly affected by all ten sesquiterpene lactones as well as the dlterpene (25) and artemetin (26). 

As BH dissociates into H+ and the uncharged base B, the dielectric constant can exert only a minor effect on the mutual coulombic attraction, so that even in water (e = 78.5) the pKa values of aliphatic amines do not differ much from the above picture of the influence of solvent basicity. That piiTa(water) lies between ptfa(m.cresoi) and p a(acetlc acid) instead of between the latter and p.Ka(pyridine) may be ascribed to effects of solvation however, the p a(Water) values of the aromatic amines are low owing to effects of mesomerism. 

Fluorescence Correction. Fluorescence is usually a minor effect, and is often ignored. The classic case is that of Cr in stainless steels, where the Cr K line us fluoresced by the Fe K line, giving rise to an apparent increase in Cr content as the foil gets thicker. 

An advantage of NMR spectroscopy is the analysis of protein dynamics. Measurement and analysis of the relaxation parameters R1 R2, and the 15N NOE of 15N-labeled proteins leads to an order parameter (S2) that can describe the relative mobility of the backbone of the protein. Both collagenase-1 and stromelysin-1 have been studied either as inhibited complexes or the free protein [19, 52], Stromleysin-1 was studied with inhibitors binding to prime or nonprime subsites. Presence or absence of inhibitors in the nonprime sites had minor effects on the highly ordered structure of residues in these subsites, which are in contact with the... 

Some other dimensionless groups are also used individually to account for other minor effects. The basic concepts of the principal dimensionless groups used by Boure (1966) and by Ishii and Zuber (1970) were compared by Boure et al. 

Solvents regularly used in organic reactions are used in heterogeneous catalysis of organic reactions. When solvent information is known, it accompanies other reaction information in each chapter. It must be remembered, however, that the solvent may interact with the catalyst surface and be converted into something undesirable or may combine with or modify one or more of the reactants. The example in Table 1.351 shows the rather minor effect of solvents on the stereochemistry of hydrogenation of the exo double bond in a spatane precursor.
