The importance of conserving biodiversity for sustainable use was a topic of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Rio Summit) and resulted in a series of international action plans including the development of the Convention onBiological Divo-sity [8]. This Convention highlights not only the importance of biodiversity but also the importance of the links between biodiversity and the economic development of human societies, especially in areas of high biodiversity [9]. [Pg.129]

One of the conclusions from the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro (the Earth Summit) was the urgent need to find a more sustainable way of life, based on careful use of resources and a reduction in environmental emissions. There was also a call to move towards a model in which environmental enhancement is fully integrated with economic development. The consequences of this summit have been far-reaching not least by the fact that, in Europe and elsewhere, environmental protection requirements are now integrated into many policies rather than being separate pieces of legislation. Indeed Article 2 of the EC treaty states that the Community shall. .. promote throughout the Community harmonious, balanced and sustainable development of economic activities This may be viewed as the first step towards... [Pg.291]

Today, reference to the PP can be found in several international agreements and declarations. However, the description of the PP that has had the greatest impact can be found in the Rio Declaration from the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, and the Swedish government repeatedly referred to it when it proposed the Unified Environmental Code of 1998 to the Parliament. How- 51... [Pg.257]

An adequate supply of safe food is considered to be essential for everyone -more or less a right for all people. The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development at its meeting in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 adopted the Agenda 21 Strategy Document, which in Chapter 6 stresses specifically that particular attention should be directed towards food safety, with the priority placed on the elimination of food contamination.1... [Pg.263]

Precaution principle At the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro the (nonbinding) Rio Declaration of 1992 was agreed on, with the following text ... [Pg.509]

In 1992, the US government ratified the precautionary principle by signing the Rio Declaration of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. Article 15 of the Rio Declaration says, In order to protect the environment, the precautionary approach shall be widely applied by States [nations] according to their capabilities. Where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage, lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent environmental degradation. Cost-effective means lowest cost. [Pg.1007]

Agenda 21, for example, the plan of action to achieve sustainable development that was adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, calls on countries and the international community to develop indicators of sustainable development. Such indicators are needed to increase focus on sustainable development and assist decision-makers at all levels to adopt sound national sustainable development policies. [Pg.283]

The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (the Earth Summit) that took place at Rio de Janeiro in 1992 tried to help redress the balance (with mixed results) by encouraging states to take responsibility for policing their own environmental issues. This proved very effective in industrialised countries, which continue to tighten their control, and chemical industry associations played their part through initiatives such as the Voluntary Energy Efficiency Programme (VEEP). Even so, economic considerations have perpetuated the concept of pollution havens elsewhere, and the export of low added value processes to less effectively policed economies continues. [Pg.97]

In 1992 a successor conference, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), was held in Rio de Janeiro. It considered (Hogress since Stockholm in order to chart the way ahead. Its theme was sustainable development and it was held under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The UN Commission f(Mr Sustainable Development emerged from this meeting. Additionally, UNEP was given a strengthened role. [Pg.65]

At the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (2-14 June 1992, Rio De Janeiro) the IPCS had been designated as the nucleus for strengthened international cooperation on environmental and sound management of chemicals. The role of poisons information centres in areas such as chemical risk reduction had been recognized, and governments were urged to establish poisons information centres in their countries. [Pg.417]

Following the United Nations conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro, June 1992, many countries have begun to develop objectives for environmental sustainabilitj. [Pg.620]

Considering women s needs contributes to a sustainable urban society and improves urban life quality (Parfect and Power 1997), particularly as women form half of the community. The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development that was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 affirmed women s critical contributions to envirorunental management. Agenda 21, the UNCED action plan for sustainable development, proposed actions to strengthen the role of women in sustainable development by eliminating obstacles to their equal participation, particularly in decision-making (Corral 2002). [Pg.214]

Alkaloids are diverse in number and form. They can be produced naturally, artificially, or by chance or accident (mutations) and they are therefore a part of global and local biodiversity. Protection of the biodiversity of our Earth was proclaimed by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) and the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, and it is continuously under public attention in all nations and international discussions. A problem connected with biodiversity, sometimes silenced by scientists, politicians, and nature protection leaders and movements is that the absolute exact number of species existing on the Earth is not known. The answer to the question of how many species exist on the globe is not known and probably never will be known exactly, because the answer needs final documentation of every form of life in all environments and places on the Earth. This is possible only theoretically. Today, more than 275,000 plant species have been described, and about 1.65 million living fungi species are known. About 186,(X)0 species of mollusks are estimated... [Pg.293]

In 1992 the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro adopted a mandate to develop GHS and by 2000 the initial system was formed. Designing an international system to classify and label chemicals has been a slow and complicated process and implementation of this system is still in progress. The first edition of GHS appeared in 2003. The document describing GHS is known as The Purple Book and it underwent revisions in 2005, 2007, and 2009. [Pg.139]

In 1992, during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio dejaneiro, environmental biotechnology was recognized and embraced as a crucial tool for both repairing and preventing environmental and health issues caused by humans. Since this conference, the field of environmental biotechnology has advanced at a rapid rate and has grown to provide innovative approaches to the sustainable development and protection of the world s ecosystems. [Pg.678]

In 1992 REPRESENTATIVES of 172 countries met in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development—a conference that became known as the Earth Summit. Five years later, in December 1997, representatives of 130 nations met... [Pg.703]

Firstly, there have been several versions of the principle. Principle 15 at the United Nations Conference on environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 advocated the widespread application of the precautionary principle. In 2000 the European Commission issued a communication [COM(2000)1] aimed at clarifying the principle and its application within the EU. [Pg.219]

Basing on this, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro 1992 has instituted "Sustainable Development" as the only possible way to ensure the long-term survival of mankind. [Pg.451]
