The docudrama has its roots in the documentary. The sense of actuality in Robert Flaherty s Nanook of the North and Man of Aran conveyed the idea of cultures quickly giving way to modem urban life. Equally important, however, these documentaries took editorial positions about those cultures, advocacy positions that were romantic but also represented a wish that the pattern of these cultures passing were not so inevitable a byproduct of modernization. These two elements—actuality and a social, or political, perspective on the life situation of the participants—link the documentary directly to the docudrama. 

Everywhere on the planet, for people of similar socioeconomic class, urban life is more stressful than rural life. A rich family in Tokyo is certainly less stressed than a poor family in a Japanese mountain village, but a poor family in Tokyo is usually more stressed than a comparable rural family. Urban life stress is correlated with an increased prevalence of psychiatric disorders and also correlated with maternal stress during pregnancy. Women do not experience pregnancy disconnected from their surroundings, and as we ll see later, the impacts of maternal stress on the developing fetus can be dramatic. 

For centuries, mankind has searched for the cure of illnesses in herbs. In that sense, approximately one third of drugs actually in use are from plant origin [1]. In the last decades, however, most of the drugs incorporated to the therapeutic arsenal come from synthetic sources. Nevertheless, in recent years a remarkable interest in the study of medicinal plants has appeared, mainly due to the concern about the destruction of rain forest habitats, with the risk of extinction of numerous species. Another fact is the loss of the knowledge related to the use of plant remedies by the people from native settlements, that is very common when they are incorporated to the urban life, and/or when their environmental conditions are seriously transformed. 

Evolving urban life styles (eating out, snacks, microwavable or ready to eat food) inevitably leads to an increase in material surfaces in contact with food, times in contact with materials (Figure 13.1(a)) and therefore exposure to packaging substances from early life stages (e g. baby food shown in Figure 13.1(b)). 

Considering women s needs contributes to a sustainable urban society and improves urban life quality (Parfect and Power 1997), particularly as women form half of the community. People have added substances to food since the earliest times. Ancient civilizations used salt to preserve meats, added herbs and spices to improve flavor, and preserved fruit with sugar and vegetables with vinegar. In recent times, the move from rural life to urban life has required that food be preserved, packaged, and shipped-sometimes thousands of miles-before it is consumed. Consequently, the number of food additives has increased. Current food additives are used to preserve food, enhance its flavor or color, and maintain its appearance or physical characteristics.
