Under cyclic or repeated stress conditions, rupture of protective oxide films that prevent corrosion takes place at a greater rate than that at which new protec tive films can be formed. Such a situation frequently resiilts in formation of anodic areas at the points of rupture these produce pits that serve as stress-concentration points for the origin or cracks that cause ultimate failure. [Pg.2419]

Pellethane is an extrudable thermoplastic polyurethane based on MDI and a hydrophobic polyol was used in this application. For the most part, the application was successful, but evidence of stress cracking became apparent. The combination of the hydrolytic environment and the polymer under tension caused failures that led to current leakage and ultimate failure of the device. Geothermal cements are also employed to fix the steel wellbore casing in place and tie it to the surrounding rock (8).
