Unlike ductile metals, composite laminates containing fiber-reinforced thermosetting polymers do not exhibit gross ductile yielding. However, they do not behave as classic brittle materials, either. Under a static tensile load, many of these laminates show nonlinear characteristics attributed to sequential ply failures. One of the difficulties, then, in designing with laminar composites is to determine whether the failure of the first ply constitutes material failure, termed first-ply failure (FPF), or if ultimate failure of the composite constitutes failure. In many laminar composites, ultimate failure occurs soon after first ply failure, so that an FPF design approach is justified, as illustrated for two common laminar composites in Table 8.9 (see Section 5.4.3 for information on the notations used for laminar composites). In fact, the FPF approach is used for many aerospace and aircraft applications. [Pg.835]

Five chemical compositions constitute these pigment classes. Medium chrome yellow is essentially PbCr04 and is the reddest hue of yellow. Solid solutions of PbCr04 with PbS04 in varying proportions yield primrose and lemon chrome yellows. Their hue difference is also attributable to the their polymorphic nature— primrose yellow is orthorhombic in crystal structure and lemon yellow is monoclinic. Infrared and Raman spectrometers usually combine a radiation source, a sample arrangement, a device for spectral dispersion or selection of radiation, and a radiation detector, connected to appropriate recording and evaluation facilities. Carbon chemists of the 1860s defined their way of classifying organic compounds, based on knowledge of composition, constitution, and chemical structure (from the 1860s onward) and acquired by experimentation and work on paper, as both natural and scientific. They clearly demarcated this experimental and theoretical mode of classification from previous ones, which relied in particular on perceptible properties. Whereas earlier chemists modes of classifying organic substances shared basic attitudes with naturalists and craftsmen, carbon chemists analytical approach was emblematic of a culture of experts and the difference of that culture from the mundane world. [Pg.288]
