Ulcer treatment

Traditional or Hj antihistamine drugs block many effects caused by histamine however, it turns out that they are not able to withstand events mediated by H2 receptors, in particular excess gastric juice secretion. In 1977 an H2-receptor antagonist, cimetidine, was proposed, which revolutionized stomach ulcer treatment. Later on, ranitidine was proposed, followed by drugs with minor structural and pharmacological differences such as famotidine and nizatidine. [Pg.230]

One application per ulcer treatment is usually sufficient. If the ulcer pain returns shortly after rinsing with water, some part of the ulcer was not covered. Then apply a second application to the ulcer immediately until it remains pain-free after rinsing. It is not recommended that more than 1 treatment session be performed on any individual mucosal ulcer. Do not reapply the product to the same lesion after it is free of pain. [Pg.1442]

H2 Antagonists and the Treatment of Peptic Ulcers. Treatment of peptic ulcers is a complicated and multilevel therapy in which Hj antagonists are very successful and widely used (and abused). Peptic ulcers may affect either the stomach (gastric ulcers, less common overall but more common in people with iatrogenic [i.e., physician-induced] ulcers from the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs]) or the duodenum (duodenal ulcers). The lining of the stomach or duodenum is attacked by the digestive juices to such an extent that the protective mucous layer on the surface has... [Pg.267]

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of LLLT on oxidative markers in serum and tissue biopsies of healing ulcers before and after the 8th session of an LLLT course of chronic leg ulcer treatment. Oxidative damage was assessed in terms of lipid peroxidation reflected by serum malondialdehyde (MDA) level, protein oxidation was measured in terms of tissue protein carbonyls (PCb), and DNA damage was measured in terms of DNA fragmentation. Antioxidative activity was estimated by measuring activity of SOD, GPX and CAT enzymes. [Pg.265]

More important than numerical data are the clinical implications of differences between the two countries. The largest differences have narrowed since the previous study, but important categories in which the U.S. still lagged behind Britain in December 1976 included cardiovascular drugs, peptic ulcer treatment, and central nervous system drugs—including therapies for depression, epilepsy, and migraine. [Pg.147]

The pharmaceutical businesses produce drugs and medicinal products of many kinds. One of the great revolutions of modern life has been the expectation that humans will survive diseases because of a treatment designed to deal specifically with that disease. The most successful drug ever is ranitidine (Zantac), the Glaxo-Wellcome ulcer treatment, and one of the fastest-growing is Pfizer s sildenafil (Viagra). Success refers both to human health and to profit ... [Pg.11]

An important consideration in the agricultural production of plants containing medicinally active components is that they are sometimes produced by, or in consequence of, microbial agents present in or on the plant. These also constitute part of the biodiversity regulated by law, may be pathogenic to other economic crops and are not always easily cultured. Production in the natural habitat raises no problems. As an example one may notice that the maytansinoids, ansa-macrolides, which form part of the chemical make-up of Maytenus ilicifolia and M. aquifolia, Celastraceae, the two species most highly considered for stomach ulcer treatment, have been shown to be produced by bacteria associated with the plants. ... [Pg.219]
