Ellison—Zollinger syndrome

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) is characterized by the development of a tumor (gastrinoma) or tumors that secrete excessive levels of gastrin, a hormone that stimulates production of acid by the stomach. In most cases, the tumor or tumors arise within the pancreas and/or the upper region of the small intestine (duodenum). [Pg.1483]

Less common causes of peptic ulceration include Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES), cancer chemotherapy, radiation, and vascular insufficiency. ZES is caused by a gastrin-producing tumor called a gastrinoma and results in gastric acid hypersecretion. High-dose oral proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy is the initial treatment of choice for ZES intermittent intravenous PPI therapy may be required for any patient in whom oral therapy is contraindicated.1... [Pg.270]

Ranitidine is a histamine receptor antagonist. It acts essentially on the H2 receptor and blocks acid production. Ranitidine is used in the treatment and prevention of ulcers, NSAID-induced ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. [Pg.329]

This lack of complete effectiveness led to the hypothesis that a second type of histamine receptor existed. In 1972, Black et al. (55) discovered a new series of antagonists which they called H2 receptor blockers. Burimamide was the first highly effective H2 blocker, but it was poorly absorbed orally. The modified compound, metiamide, had better absorption but was found to cause granulocytopenia (57.58). Finally, cimetidine was tested and found to be a potent and relatively non-toxic antagonist (59). Cimetidine is now widely used clinically to treat duodenal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome and other gastric hypersecretory diseases (32). [Pg.426]

Hypersecretory conditions including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome - The recommended starting dose is 60 mg/day. Dosages up to 90 mg twice/day have been administered. Administer daily dosages of greater than 120 mg in divided doses. [Pg.1382]

Hypersecretory conditions, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome- Start dosing at 60 mg once/day. Dosing may be divided. Doses up to 100 mg/day and 60 mg twice/day have been administered. [Pg.1386]

Peptic ulceration occurs as an acute or chronic non-traumatic epithelial breach typically in the gastric or duodenal mucosa, but also in the oesophagus (see above) and occasionally in the small intestine with the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome of gastrin overproduction or with an acid-secreting Meckel s diverticulum. Symptoms overlap with those of non-ulcer dyspepsia and cancer and the diagnostic cornerstone is endoscopy. Biopsy may be necessary to distinguish ulcer from cancer. [Pg.621]

The answers are 406-c, 407-g. (Hardman, pp 907-909, 926-927.) Omeprazole, which is an inhibitor of the parietal cell H, K, ATPase pump (proton pump), is the most effective means of decreasing gastric acidity. This makes it the ideal agent to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, which results from increased gastric secretion due to gastrinomas. [Pg.227]

Glucagon has also been used to stimulate insulin and C-peptide secretion, to see whether the islets still produce insulin, as a stimulatory test during pheochromocytoma, hyperinsulinism, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, or as an additive in upper gastrointestinal X-ray investigations (0.5-1 mg). It has been used in myocardial infarction, although its inotropic effects may present a risk. It has also been used to treat overdoses with beta-blockers (3) and calcium channel blockers (4), although its efficacy in such cases has only been demonstrated in animals (5) and to treat overdose with tricyclic antidepressants (6,7). [Pg.384]

In patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, omeprazole causes significant weight gain, perhaps because of shifts in hormonal balance (SEDA-17, 419 897,898). [Pg.634]
