Gastric ulcers induced in rats by repeated administration of caffeine can be reduced by the administration of 6-methyluracil. Treatment is more effective when this compound is combined with either 2-methyl-4,6-dihydroxypyrimidine or cytosine [273]. In a study of the influence of 6-methyluracil and uracil on experimental blastomogenesis in mice, it was found that 6-methyluracil reduces the frequency of urethan-induced lung adenoma whereas uracil increases the instances [274]. 6-Methyluracil, like orotic acid, can restore experimentally induced infarction in rabbits [179-182]. [Pg.297]

Traditional or Hj antihistamine drugs block many effects caused by histamine however, it turns out that they are not able to withstand events mediated by H2 receptors, in particular excess gastric juice secretion. In 1977 an H2-receptor antagonist, cimetidine, was proposed, which revolutionized stomach ulcer treatment. Later on, ranitidine was proposed, followed by drugs with minor structural and pharmacological differences such as famotidine and nizatidine. [Pg.230]

Helicobacter pylori H. pylori is found in approximately 100% of chronic active antral gastritis cases, 90% to 95% of duodenal ulcer patients, and 50% to 80% of gastric ulcer patients. The treatment of documented H. pylori infection in patients with confirmed peptic ulcer on first presentation or recurrence has been recommended by the National Institutes for Health in a 1994 Consensus Conference. Once H. py/on eradication has been achieved, reinfection rates are less than 0.5% per year, and ulcer recurrence rates are dramatically reduced. [Pg.1434]
