The walkie or pallet truck is one of industy s most versatile pieces of equipment. It is designed to transport, load, unload, lift, pick, stage, and store materials or product. These units can be found in just about any facility that moves product. They are relatively inexpensive and don t require the same degree of maintenance, operating expense, or operator training as forklifts. Walkies can easily move product around at any small business where material handling needs are small. 

In order to maintain a high level of quality and safety in the actual operations, whether chemicals are transferred, loaded/unloaded or transported, proper operating instructions/procedures are crucial and should be regularly reviewed. 

The Hazardous Materials Transportation Act (HMTA) defines transportation releases to be those that occur during loading, unloading, transportation or temporary storage of hazardous materials or waste. Releases that meet certain criteria (see Table 64.1) should be reported to the National Response Center (NRC) and the state response center. Partially stoppered vials are transported to the lyophilizer using the auto load/unload system (ALUS) and loaded into the chamber of the lyophilizer. 

Palletisation enables a unit load to be lifted, transported, loaded for distribution, unloaded, etc. with the minimum of manual handling. Pallets are designed to be stacked, and usually one onto another if the product/pack/pallet design permits. Pallets come in different sizes, styles and are designed to be handled by fork lift systems. 

The production line consists of two machines (Ml and M2), two robots (R1 and R2), and two conveyors. Each machine is serviced by a dedicated robot that performs the load/unload task. One conveyor is used to transport workpieces, a maximinn two at one time. The other conveyor is used to transport empty pallets. Three pallets are available in the system. Each workpiece is machined on Ml and then on M2. The machining time is 10 time miits on Ml and 16 time units on M2. The load and unload tasks takes 1 time unit. 

Coal is a raw material for many chemical syntheses as weU as fuel. Coal is dried to increase its calorific value and simplify loading, unloading, transport, and to improve boiler combustion efficiency. It is also dried for processes like briquetting, coking, gasification, carbonization, and liquid fuel synthesis. Coke oven efficiency can increase 30%-50% in preheating and 10%-15% in drying.

Conveyors have the advantage of being relatively maintenance free but have the disadvantage of location inflexibility, making a truck haul still necessary. Movable conveyor belts have been developed and used (U.S. DOE, 1979). The only adverse environmental impacts of conveyor belts for coal transport are coal dust losses during loading, unloading, or transport. 

JIT is followed when a large inventory can block a lot of working capital. Procurement of various items is planned and executed in such a manner that they arrive at point of application just when they are to be used/fed into the system. This needs very accurate estimation of the rates of consumption time required for procurement (testing samples at vendor s works, loading, transportation, and unloading at site) is necessary for the success of this arrangement. However, a reasonable stock of the spares shall be available in the stores as matter of abundant precaution.
