TEHIP s primary information resource repository is the TOXNET system of databases. TOXNET comprises databases of summary toxicological information, technical literature, references, chemical nomenclature, and toxic releases. It also provides links to additional sources of information on toxicology, environmental health, and hazardous chemicals. The contents of the TOXNET databases are derived from federal agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Cancer Institute, and NLM itself.

This system contains reported information on annual releases of toxic chemicals to the environment, as required by SARA Title III. The database is available on-line through EPA s mainframe and through the National Library of Medicine s TOXNET database. CD ROM and magnetic tape versions are available through NTIS and the Government Printing Office.

TOXNET is a series of databases on chemical toxicity hosted by the National Institutes of Medicine, which allows multiple searching options. The databases include ChemIDplus, HSDB, Toxline, CCRIS, DART, GENETOX, IRIS, ITER, LactMed, Multi-Database, TRI, Haz-Map, Household Products and TOXMAP. 

ToxSeek is an NLM metasearch engine and clustering tool that enables the simultaneous searching of many different toxicology and environmental health information databases and web sites. This tool includes 59 databases including the TOXNET Search tool, as well as information sources from NLM, NIH, US Government, International and other sources.

SIS s Toxicology and Environmental Health Information Program (TEHIP) produces TOXNET (TOXNET 2007), a collection of toxicology and environmental health databases that includes, among others, the Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), a database of potentially hazardous chemicals, TOXLINE (containing references to the world s toxicology literature), and ChemIDplus (a chemical dictionary and structure database). 

Some SIS products help to address the toxicology and environmental health information needs of the general public. One such resource is ToxTown, an interactive guide to toxic chemicals and environmental health issues in everyday locations. It is a companion to the extensive information in the TOXNET collection of databases. The Household Products Database is a consumer s guide that provides information on the potential health effects of chemicals contained in more than 5000 common household products used inside and around the home. This database allows consumers, scientists, and health professionals to investigate ingredients in brand-name products. 

Software and Online Sources of Chemical Properties. Larson et al.28 and Andren et al.16 provide a thorough listing of electronic databases and online search engines for environmental fate properties. Very useful online databases for these parameters include Syracuse Research Corporation s (SRC s) (Syracuse, NY) Environmental Fate Database (EFDB) and the Hazardous Substances DataBank available at http //toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/. This information may be gleaned from specialized ADR resources, texts, and other tertiary sources, including the FDA-approved product label. However, this information must often be augmented using additional data from secondary sources. At minimum, this should include searches of the bibliographic databases from the National Library of Medicine (Medline and Toxnet) and Excerpta Medica (Embase). 

Together, these databases contain over 75 000 references to the worldwide literature of teratology and some coverage of developmental and reproductive toxicology. DART covers 1989 to the present and ETICBACK covers 1950-1989. Over half the references are scanned into DART from MEDLINE and it includes coverage of technical reports and conference papers. This huge data file covers over 4500 potentially hazardous chemical substances. It contains information on human exposure, industrial hygiene, emergency-handling procedures, environmental fate, regulatory requirements, and related areas. All data are referenced and derived from a core set of books, government documents, technical reports and selected primary journal literature. HSDB is peer-reviewed by the Scientific Review Panel (SRP), a committee of experts in the major subject areas within the data bank s scope. ITER is a free Internet database of human health risk values for over 600 chemicals of environmental concern from several organizations worldwide. The data are presented in table format with side-by-side comparisons of risk values from the various organizations, below which are synopses that provide explanations for differences among risk values as well as links to more detailed information. ITER currently contains data from the Agency for Toxic Substances Disease Registry (ATSDR), Health Canada, National Institute of Public Health and the Environment, The Netherlands (RFVM), US EPA, and independent parties whose risk values have undergone peer review.
