Glucose isomerase catalyzes the conversion of D-glucose to D-fructose and has also been used extensively on an industrial scale.1184 Some, but not all, enzymes of this family require Co specifically, while others can function with other divalent ions. Environmental and health issues limit the concentrations of Co in culture media during D-fructose production and other metal ions are being sought as substitutes. Although the active site structure remains unknown, EXAFS, optical and EPR spectroscopy has suggest a low-spin divalent Co ion, bound by N and O-donors only (no S-donors).

Proliferation of modern pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals has resulted in a mushrooming of the literature on their prenatal toxicology, which 1s an Important element 1n the total spectrum of toxicity Information. 

Free radical polymerization may be carried out in various media. Bulk polymerization is the simplest, but while the reactants (monomers) are most often liquid, the product (polymer) is solid. This leads to problems when removing the polymer from the reactor. In addition, since most free radical polymerizations are highly exothermic, the high viscosity of the monomer/polymer mix inhibits the removal of the heat of reaction. Solution polymerization will reduce, to some extent, the viscosity of the polymerizing mass, but it brings with it the environmental and health issues of organic solvents. In addition, the solvent reduces the monomer concentration, and hence the rate of polymerization. Finally, recovery and recycling of the solvent can add substantially to the cost of the process. Nevertheless, solution polymerization of vinylic monomers is used in a number of commercial processes. 

A major environmental and health issue is currently the toxicity of PFOA and its salts used in the polymerization process and in processing of the majority of fluoropolymers [27,28] and issues involving the use of PTFE coating on cookware and its thermal degradation [29-32]. The presence of radon gas has become a much publicized environmental and health issue because of the radiation danger it poses. Radioactive isotopes such as radium-226 are naturally present in many types of rocks and soils. Radium-226 emits an alpha particle and is converted into radon gas, which diffuses out of the rocks and sou. 

In summary, an overview of the most recent literature was provided that furnished BRMs with interesting activity. Both environmental and health issues were discussed that can be alleviated with the aid of products from MBFTs. The molecular diversity achieved by the application of the various MBFT protocols might reveal new biological activity or pharmaco-selectivity that was not accomplished or accessible before.

The demand for man-made polymers and polymeric fibers is growing due to the flexibility of processing, which allows a material with specific mechanical, electrical, optical, and chemical features to be tailored to fit a specific application. This has led to an increase in research to find more source polymers. However, the growth in man-made polymers has raised environmental and health issues. Research and developmental activity has increased in the development of biopolymers to meet the current and future demand for sustainability. There is also a need to develop processing equipment for the production of fibers in the nanometer range. The future of polymer production appears to be interesting and commercially sustainable. 

Depending on fashion, each year different materials have been and are currently used in the manufacturing of shoes, ranging from rubber soles (vulcanized styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), thermoplastic rubber, EPDM) to different polymers (leather, polyurethanes, ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene, Phylon). To produce adequate adhesive joints, surface preparation of those materials is required (see part B Surface treatments). Surface preparation procedures for these materials must be quickly developed and the validity of these treatments is generally too short. Several procedures have been established to optimize the upper to sole bonding, most of them are based in the use of organic solvents. Due to environmental and health issues, solvents should be removed from the surface preparation procedure and several environmental friendly procedures for the surface preparation of several materials have been proposed. 

A key concern for formulators is the biodegradability of the surfactants they use. This has been driven by a growing public awareness of potential environmental and health issues related to chemicals in general. Certainly this has been the case in the consumer products market for some time, where people are concerned that chemicals ending up in the sewage system pose a threat to their local rivers and water supply. Today, the concern has spread beyond the consumer products market and is inherent in all industries using surfactants.
