Solvents, extender oils, and insoluble monomers are used throughout the rubber industry. In addition, miscellaneous oils are used to lubricate machinery. Laboratory analysis indicates the presence of oil and grease in the raw wastewater of these plants. Oil and grease entering the wastewater streams are removed by chemical coagulation, dissolved air flotation, and, to some extent, biological oxidation.

This section will focus on reactions that exemplify the use of particular additives and cosolvents and on the origin of the beneficial effects of the additives. Miscellaneous additives, not included in the three categories above, that promote the reactivity of Sml2 will be discussed at the end of the section. Further examples of the use of additives and cosolvents can be found in subsequent chapters. 

A chemist discovered that his neighborhood dry cleaner had routinely added DDT to the cleaning solvent for mothproofing since 1956. He extracted 30 mg. of DDT from his suit which had been cleaned at this establishment. Additional miscellaneous garments were analyzed, and the DDT extracted varied from 20-565 p.p.m. (50). In one experiment 3.3 mg. dieldrin (1,2,3,4,10,10-hexachloro-exo—6,7, epoxy 1,4,4a,5, 6,7,8,8a-octahydro-l,4—endo, exo, 5,8—dimethanonaphthalene) also used at one time for mothproofing was removed by 1 liter of sweat from treated woolen cloth (35).
