One of the first reports on yeast-mediated color removal by a putative process of biosorption of azo dyes by yeast (Rhodotorula sp.) biomass belongs to [31]. Yeast species such as Kluveromyces marxianus removed the diazo dye remazol black B [10], Candida catenulata and Candida kefyr removed more than 90% of amaranth by biosorption [6]. Biosorption uptake of the textile azo dyes remazol blue, reactive black, and reactive red by S. cerevisiae and C. tropicalis varied according to the selected dye, dye concentration, and exposure time [5, 7]. In a recent screening work carried out by [32], from the 44 yeast strains tested for their decolorization ability, 12 of them removed the dye Reactive Brilliant Red K-2BP by biosorption, among them the following were identified S. cerevisiae, Saccharomyces uvarum, Torulopsis Candida, and Saccharomycopsis lipolytica. [Pg.186]

Fermentation procedures useful for the production of uridine 5 -(a-D-galactopyranosyl pyrophosphate) involve the cultivation of bacterial mutant-strains that are deficient in the 4"-epimerase for 30 (see Section V,l,b, p. 369) in D-galactose-containing media,245-247 or by incubating Torulopsis Candida cells with uridine 5 -phosphate, D-galactose, potassium phosphate, and magnesium sulfate.248... [Pg.341]

Yeast strains belonging to the species of Candida fahianii, Candida guilliermondii, Candida tropicalis, Deharyomyces hansenii, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Torulopsis Candida CandidaJumata), and Williopsis satumus also exhibit the nitrile hydratase/ amidase system able to use the series of aliphatic mono- and dinitriles as well as their matching amides as the sole N-source [20]. [Pg.273]

Hydroxylation of short chain aliphatic carboxylic acids can be accomplished by a number of micro-organisms (see also Scheme 3) including Endomyces reessii, Trichosporum fermentans, Torulopsis Candida and Micrococcusflavus. Longer chain carboxylic acids can also be satisfactorily hytfaoxylat ... [Pg.56]

Torulopsis candida,uv . In this system, Gal-1-phosphate and UTP were generated in situ as substrates for UDP-Gal pyrophosphorylase. Gram quantities of UDP-Gal, as well as the 2-fluoro-UDP-Gal derivative have been synthesized by an enzymatic method employing Gal-l-P uridyltransferase11161. [Pg.616]

Kinetic and Dynamic Resolution of rac-Nitriles. a-Hydroxy and a-amino acids can be obtained from the corresponding a-hydroxynitriles (cyanohydrins) and a-aminonitriles [684], which are easily synthesized in racemic form from the corresponding aldehyde precursors by addition of hydrogen cyanide or a Strecker synthesis, respectively (Schemes 2.107 and 2.108). In aqueous systems, cyanohydrins are stereochemically labile and undergo spontaneous racemization via HCN elimination, which furnishes a dynamic resolution process. From aliphatic rac-cyanohydrins, whole cells of Torulopsis Candida yielded the corresponding (S)-a-hydroxy acids [685], while (R)-mandelic add is produced from rac-mandelraiitrile... [Pg.137]

A polysaccharide-protein complex isolated from the cell walls of Torulopsis Candida contains residues of D-mannose and 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose. The D-mannose units are attached singly and as (1 - 2)-linked di- and trisaccharides to L-serine residues of the peptide chain by 0-glycosidic linkages, while D-mannan chains are terminated at the reducing end by units of chito-biose which in turn are attached to the peptide backbone by A -glycosidic linkages. [Pg.285]
