Thermosetting Plastics Thermosets

Thermosets are formed by crosslinking (curing) of reactive linear and branched macromolecules and can be manufactured by polycondensation, polymerization and polyaddition. Thermosets can therefore be processed once only with the application of heat and pressure to form semi-finished products or finished articles and cannot be recovered their processing is irreversible. Amongst the most familiar thermosets are the combinations of formaldehyde with phenol, resorcinol etc. (phenolics), urea, aniline, melamine and similar combinations (aminoplastics). [Pg.175]

Because of the dark self-color of phenolics, which are processed predominantly with a high filler content (up to 80% ), there are limits to their coloration. [Pg.175]

Thermosets are processed by compression molding, transfer molding and injection molding or by extrusion, depending on their structure. The pressing temperatures are about 150 to 190°C. Corresponding requirements are placed on the pigments. Dyes are often also used to color thermosets. [Pg.176]

The pigments are incorporated into the resins before crosslinking to ensure homogeneous coloration. This can be done in the molten resin, for example in a kneader at about 90°C, or in dissolved or liquid resins by the liquid resin method. Ball mills are normally used for coloring prewetted powder molding compounds that have not yet been cured. [Pg.176]

Unsaturated polyester and methacrylate casting resins are normally cured with organic peroxides. The polyester casting resins are dissolved in monostyrene, and temperatures up to 200°C are reached in their polymerization. Thick-walled articles in particular are often exposed to heat for a long period of time. The required heat resistance of the organic pigments used is governed by this. [Pg.176]


Plastics can be placed into two main categories, thermoplastic and thermoset. Thermoset plastics are irreversibly formed into a permanent shape often by applying heat. Thermosets caimot be softened and remoulded on heating and have few applications in food packaging, except for the iimer linings used for can coatings and many adhesives, as used, for example, in multilayer materials. A limited range of food contact materials is made from thermosets, predominantly melamine resins and unsaturated polyesters used in tableware and utensils. [Pg.236]

In-mold decoration can be done with either injection molding of thermoplastics or compression molding of thermosets. Thermosetting plastics are decorated with a two-stage process. In the sheet-forming process, stainless steel, bronze, nickel-base alloys, or titanium powders are mixed with a thermosetting plastic and presintered to polymerize the plastic. In Ancient Egypt mummies were wrapped in cloth dipped in a solution of bitumen in oil of lavender which was known variously as Syrian Asphalt or Bitumen of Judea. The polysulphones tend to be used in applications when requirements cannot quite be met by the much cheaper polycarbonates and possibly aromatic polyethers. In many of the fields of use they have replaced or are replacing ceramics, metals and thermosetting plastics rather than other thermoplastics. [Pg.601]

Where plastics are to be used for electrical applications, then electrical properties as well as mechanical and other properties need to be considered. Whilst properties such as resistivity, power factor and dielectric constant are important, they may not be all-important.
