Figure 3.4 Schematic comparison of limits of detection (LoD) in solution (log ppb) for various absorption/emission spectrometries. For each technique, the solid box encompasses the majority of elements reported. A few relevant elements have been marked on specifically at the upper and lower end of the range for each technique. Note that LoD can vary for the same element depending on matrix and analytical conditions, and that not all elements are detectable by every technique. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data were collected via a Siemens D5005 diffractometer with CuKa radiation (A. = 1.5418 A). Routine transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Z-contrast microscopy were carried out using an HITACH HD-2000 scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) operated at 200 kV. Nitrogen gas adsorption measurements (Micromeritics Gemini) were used to determine the surface area and porosity of the catalyst supports. Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis was performed via an IRIS Intrepid II XSP spectrometer (Thermo Electron Corporation). [Pg.58]

Use, for example, 32-mer DNA aptamer modified by biotin at 3 end of the following sequence 3 -BIO-GGG TTT TCA CTT TTG TGG GTT GGA CGG GAT GG - 5. This aptamer has at its 5 end typical motif with high affinity to the heparin-binding site of the thrombin [1], (Please note that aptamer that selectively bind the fibrinogen-binding site of thrombin has a different structure—see Chapter 33 in CD accompanying this book). The aptamer can be purchased from Thermo Electron Corporation, Germany. [Pg.1270]

The use of organic components increases the discrimination in soils that are otherwise similar. For example, soils that have identical Munsell color values could be discriminated by subtractive FTIR. A new ancillary method using thermal gravimetric analysis in addition to IR analysis on samples prior to and after pyrolysis has been applied to soils and could give additional valuable information for the discrimination of soils (Thermo electron corporation application note 50862). [Pg.285]

See Chromatography, Appendix BA.) Use a gas chromatograph equipped with a Thermal Energy Analyzer detector (Thermo Electron Corporation, or equivalent) and a 1.8-m x 3-mm (od) stainless steel column, or equivalent, packed with 20% Carbowax 20M, or equivalent, and 2% sodium hydroxide on 80- to 100-mesh, acid-washed Chromosorb P, or equivalent. Maintain the column at 170°. Set the injector port temperature to 220°. Use argon as the carrier gas, with a flow rate of 25 to 30 mL/min. Operate with a -110° to -130° slush bath. Adjust instrument parameters such as vacuum chamber pressure, oxygen flow, and calibration knob to obtain the proper sensitivity. [Pg.268]

The orbitrap is an electrostatic ion trap that uses the Fourier transform to obtain mass spectra. This analyser is based on a completely new concept, proposed by Makarov and described in patents in 1996 [26] and 2004 [27], and in Analytical Chemistry in 2000 [28], A third patent describes a complete instrument including an atmospheric pressure source [29], Another article was also published with Cooks in 2005 [30]. The first commercial instrument was introduced on the market by the Thermo Electron Corporation in June 2005. [Pg.122]

Recent converter hardware development has concentrated on flame heated devices for terrestrial topping cycle applications. Significant progress has been made with chemical vapor deposited silicon carbide as the oxidation protection hot shell. Flame heated converters have now been operated by Thermo Electron Corporation with emitter temperatures over 1700 K for 7000+ hours ( ). [Pg.437]

A commercial instrument for extensional viscosity measurements is currently offered by the Thermo Electron Corporation [40], The device uses capillary breakup techniques and is called the Haake CaBER . Vilastic Scientific, Inc. also offers an orifice attachment to their oscillatory rheometer for extensional viscosity determinations [41,42], The principle of operation of the rheometer is oscillatory tube flow [43,44], Dynamic mechanical properties can be determined... [Pg.97]

Recent studies by Thermo Electron Corporation have shown that certain forms of waste heat utilization (e.g., recuperators or process steam boilers) provide a better return on investment than that obtainable from bottoming cycle generators. The optimum choice of heat recovery strategy depends, in part, upon the temperature of exhaust heat available. [Pg.139]

In Vivo Studies. Segments of bovine-implanted Biomer LVAD bladders were obtained from researchers at the Thermo Electron Corporation. Segments that possessed observed calcifications were also obtained. In addition, a control bladder sample, steam sterilized at 121.1°C for 3 h, was obtained. Samples were vacuum dried at 50°C for 24 h, followed by a 24-h CHC13 solvent extraction. Extract solutions were reduced to 1 mL prior to gas chromatographic (GC) analysis. [Pg.395]
