THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION

There is increasing demand for information on environmental activities of companies. Governments, environmental pressure groups, and more importantly, investors, insurance companies and clients are beginning to include environmental performance as part of their evaluation of company quality. [Pg.132]

Effectively managing and communicating company environmental performance to such a wide variety of receptors requires some form of systematisation. This can take the form of Environmental Management Systems (EMS), Environmental Accounting (EA), Environmental Performance Indicators (EPI) and environmental reporting. [Pg.133]

Managing environmental issues is not only done to satisfy external pressure for environmental change. There are several business opportunities in doing so, according to the authors of the standards and guidelines which will be reviewed in this chapter. Frequently-cited opportunities are  [Pg.133]

The last three points deserve particular attention industrial stakeholders such as governments, public interest groups, environmental, legal and financial consultants, as well as banks and other financial institutions are increasingly asking for information on industrial environmental performance when making investment decisions and selecting products. [Pg.133]

Joint OSHA/EPA investigations of past accidents in tolling operations include recommendations that emphasize the importance of communication between the toller and the client. The primary ways recommended to prevent recurrence of similar events focus on a joint understanding of the basic tenets of process safety elements. [Pg.10]

The objective is to have as much firsthand experience on the team as possible. Again, the importance of communication and teamwork between the toller and their client must be emphasized. [Pg.90]

I looked at the page I had selected and found that my finger was directly above Ezekiel n 24. The words of this verse, as well as the one directly following it, described my liberation from the more terrifying aspects of the psychedelic experience as well as the importance of communicating my experience to others. They read, "Then the vision that I had seen went up from me. And I told the exiles all the things that the Lord had showed me."... [Pg.222]

The importance of communication was evident throughout the development and implementation of the QA program at DCLS. A communication network between the QA unit and all levels of management and laboratory personnel is essential to the success of such a program. At DCLS, this communication network consists of regular Section, Bureau, and Division QA Team meetings, and quarterly reports from the individual Sections and the Bureaus to the QA Section and management, in addition to audit reports. [Pg.32]

Discuss the Importance of communication systems during large events. [Pg.204]

A landmark 1988 report, The Future of Public Health (soon to be updated), identified many of the critical challenges to education, practice, and applications of public health. In 1998, the Institute helped develop the prototype leading indicators for Healthy People 2010, the nation s blueprint for prevention. The importance of community organization and partnerships in furthering the public health has been underscored by a number of other Institute reports. [Pg.481]

On October 17, 1986, the SARA was created to extend the reach of CERCLA. Found at 42 U.S.C. 11001 et seq., this amendment increased the Superfund trust to 8.5 billion, but more importantly added legislation stressing the importance of community involvement, knowledge, and well-being, while simultaneously increasing the emphasis on permanence in solutions to hazardous-waste sites. As a result, the most well-known... [Pg.902]

Many chemical education researchers are faculty members within departments of chemistry at higher education institutions. The type of research work that they carry out has fundamental similarities to other scientific research in the department, but differs in its methods and tools. Research in chemical education can be of great benefit to departments and other scientists in those departments. However, the work and the field may not be fully understood by all of the stakeholders. This chapter describes ways in which the goals of chemistry departments and chemical education researchers can be identified and overlap between them can be found. Descriptions of possible modes of collaboration and interaction are provided. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the importance of communication among chemical education researchers, other scientists and the broader public. [Pg.215]

The Business Charter encourages firms to be pro-active on environmental issues, anticipating legislation and setting the examples by carrying out research on environmental issues of concern in addition to the necessary legal compliance. The importance of communicating environmental activities to improve business, performance, and reputation is emphasised. [Pg.136]

A reminder again that although we have listed the presentation as step 8 of the design process, quite often ei ineers are required to pve oral and written progress reports on a r ular time basis to various groups. Consequendy, presentation could well be an int ral part of many odier design stq>s. Because of the importance of communication, we have devoted an entire diapter to er neering communication (See Chapter 4). [Pg.46]

The third case is successfully working since a long time in the city of Kalundborg, Denmark. " It was chosen, since it demonstrates, that efficient bioresource utilization pathways may be established and may function without extensive public fundings. The Kalundborg SYMBIOSIS is an industrial ecosystem, where the residual product of one enterprise is used as a resource by another enterprise. This case study shall also demonstrate the importance of communication (Chapter 7, Section 4.3.4). [Pg.326]

The scenarios discussed in Chapter 4 demonstrate the importance of communication in determining the outcomes from any disruption of the chemical infrastructure. Chapter 5 points to the importance of communication in both pre-impact ha2ard management and emergency response and recovery. Effective communication response consists of several components ... [Pg.102]

Leader-member exchange theory focuses attention on building relationships between the leader and followers, and between followers. The theory shows the importance of communication in leadership. The in group works better together and is usually more efficient. Members of the out group are less effective. Leaders need to be aware of this and strive to nurture those who are out. ... [Pg.56]

Historically, however, probably as a function of the inherent dangers of the work, the mining industry has adopted a quasi-militaiy, command and control, management style. This is implicit in a comment in the Leon Commission Report on health and safety in mines, which has been referred to previously and is worth reiterating here, where, when discussing the importance of communications in a multiple language enviromnent, it stated ... [Pg.69]
