Classifier structures resulting from the training were verified in a blind test. To evaluate the reliability and performance of the NSC it was subjected to a blind test using unknown data containing spectra measured for various sizes and locations of the disbonds (from 50% to over 100% of the probe size). 

Flammability. The results of small-scale laboratory tests of plastic foams have been recognized as not predictive of their tme behavior in other fire situations (205). Work aimed at developing tests to evaluate the performance of plastic foams in actual fire situations continues. All plastic foams are combustible, some burning more readily than others when exposed to fire. Some additives (131,135), when added in small quantities to the polymer, markedly improve the behavior of the foam in the presence of small fire sources. Plastic foams must be used properly following the manufacturers recommendations and any appHcable regulations.

The performance of organic finishes on test is evaluated by visual observation and by physical tests made upon coated specimens that have been exposed for various periods of time to natural or accelerated weathering conditions. Electrical tests are sometimes used on immersed specimens.

A prototype is a 3-D model suitable for use in the preliminary testing and evaluation of a product (also used for modeling a die, mold and other tool). It provides a means to evaluate the product s performances before going into production. The ideal situation is for the prototype to be the actual product made in production. However machining stock material and using rapid prototype techniques can make prototypes (Chapter 4, BOOK SHELVES).

In this study, we developed microchannel PrOx reactor to control CO outlet concentrations less than 10 ppm from methanol steam reformer for PEMFC applications. The reactor was developed based on our previous studies on methanol steam reformer [5] and the basic technologies on microchaimel reactor including design of microchaimel plate, fabrication process and catalyst coating method were applied to the present PrOx reactor. The fabricated PrOx reactor was tested and evaluated on its CO removal performance. 

A test to determine the biodegradation rate of the dispersant and the biodegradation rate of the dispersant-oil mixture has been proposed [1302]. The test method is intended to supplement the toxicity tests and the effectiveness tests, which evaluate the performance of oil spill dispersants. 

U.S. EPA s Method 909040 can be used to evaluate all geosynthetic materials used in liner and LCRSs currently being designed. Method 9090 is used to predict the effects of leachate under field conditions and has been verified with limited field data. The test is performed by immersing a geosynthetic in a chemical environment for 120 days at two different temperatures room and elevated temperature. Every 30 days, samples are removed and evaluated for changes in physical properties. Tests performed on FMLs are listed in Table 26.7. The results of any test should be cross-referenced to a second, corollary test to avoid errors due to the test itself or to the laboratory personnel. 

There are three general types of data contained in three data files. These are illustrated for the exterior hardboard exposure system in Table III. The first file contains the information about the substrate. This includes an identification number for the panel, the date, the location and type of exposure to which the panel was subjected, the manufacturer of the substrate, the trade name, and the results of a series of standard test to evaluate the properties of the substrate. This information allows correlations to be made between the performance of the coating and the particular properties... 

In addition to continuous bench-scale work, CCDC carried out a rather extensive laboratory program involving the use of the microautoclave reactor. The program developed tests to compare the activities of different solvents. These tests quickly evaluated a solvent so that the performance under coal liquefaction conditions could be predicted. The tests are now used at the Wilsonville SRC Pilot Plant as a means of determining when stable operation has been achieved. 

In Chapter 5 the conceptual approach from the previous Chapter will be tested and evaluated and finally applied to a single case study in the Dutch chemical process industry. This exercise is performed to test the conceptual approach in practice. The findings of the case study will be evaluated and will lead to refinements in the conceptual approach. Finally a structured protocol will be derived and applied to the same case study to ascertain if the structured protocol is effective and suitable for practical use and leads to answering the research questions posed in Chapter 1.
