Analgesic tablets are ground into a fine powder, dissolved in HCl, and analyzed for calcium by atomic absorption. A releasing agent of La + is used to prevent an interference due to the formation of calcium pyrophosphate. 

Cosmetics and Pharmaceuticals. The main use of hexadecanol (cetyl alcohol) is in cosmetics (qv) and pharmaceuticals (qv), where it and octadecanol (stearyl alcohol) are used extensively as emoUient additives and as bases for creams, Hpsticks, ointments, and suppositories. Octadecenol (oleyl alcohol) is also widely used (47), as are the nonlinear alcohols. The compatibiHty of heavy cut alcohols and other cosmetic materials or active dmg agents, their mildness, skin feel, and low toxicity have made them the preferred materials for these appHcations. Higher alcohols and their derivatives are used in conditioning shampoos, in other personal care products, and in ingested materials such as vitamins (qv) and sustained release tablets (see Controlled RELEASE technology). 

USP-grade anhydrous magnesium carbonate is used as a flavor impression intensification vehicle in the processed food industry (see Flavors and spices). Basic magnesium carbonates are used as free flowing agents in the manufacture of table salt, as a hulking agent in powder and tablet pharmaceutical formulations, as an antacid, and in a variety of personal care products (see Pharmaceuticals). 

Uses. Commercial monocalcium phosphate is available as both the anhydrous and the monohydrate salts. Most uses are based on acidic properties. Monocalcium phosphate is used to control acidity in powdered drink mixes, as an ingredient in effervescent tablets, as a plastics stabilizer, and in ceramics. Its single largest appHcation is as a leavening agent in bread, cake mixes, and self-rising flour. 

Treatment of ceUulose with acids results in preferential hydrolysis in the more accessible amorphous regions and produces a product known as microcrystalline ceUulose (MCC). MCC is used to prepare fat-free or reduced-fat food products, to strengthen and stabilize food foams, as a tableting aid, and as a noncalotic bulking agent for dietetic foods. It has GRAS status. 

Sodium carboxymethylcellulose is Hsted in the 1990 United States Pharmacopeia under the categories of pharmaceutic aid (suspending agent, tablet binder, viscosity-increasing agent), and cathartic tablets. 

As a therapeutic agent, ch oline is adininistered orally in the form of symps or elixers containing the chloride, citrates or bitartrate, or in the form of compressed tablets or capsules of the dihydrogen citrate. Choline is also given in small doses as a nutritional supplement in combination with a variety of other materials. In dry pharmaceutical-dosage forms, the dihydrogen citrate is usually preferred because of its lower tendency to absorb atmospheric moisture. Both salts have been used parenteraHy. 

The action of epinephrine and related agents forms the basis of therapeutic control of smooth muscle contraction. Breathing disorders, including asthma and various allergies, can result from excessive contraction of bronchial smooth muscle tissue. Treatment with epinephrine, whether by tablets or aerosol inhalation, inhibits MLCK and relaxes bronchial muscle tissue.
