Synthetic resin concrete

In the melted state elementary sulfur is an excellent binder for aggregates such as sand, gravel, crushed stone, and similar materials. When a hot sulfur aggregate mixture is left to set, a material of concretelike hardness is obtained. This property leads to the term sulfur concrete or sulfur mortar, which is wrong strictly speaking, since the word concrete is used to refer to a product in which aggregates are bound with hydraulic products such as cement or with limestone. However, since polymer-bound aggregates recently developed to industrial maturity have been called polymer or synthetic resin concrete, the term sulfur concrete is maintained in this chapter. [Pg.61]

Polymer-modified Portland cement concrete is normal concrete to which a synthetic resin has been added in the formulation. The same generic resins can be used that are used in polymer concretes. Properties of these two concretes differ, even when the same generic resin is used in both. [Pg.174]

Most synthetic resins are petrochemical-based. Furan resins are unique in that they are agriculturally based, with the furfurayl alochol produced from agricultural byproducts such as com cobs, bagasse, rice, and oat hulls. Although the most versatile of all resins in use, furan resins are not a popular choice for use as polymer concrete because of their tendency to shrink and their brittleness. They do provide a wide range of corrosion resistance and are resistant to atmospheric corrosion (see Table 10.2). [Pg.175]

Membranes are applied directly to the metal or concrete surface to protect from corrosion by any liquor that penetrates the brick lining through pores and cracks. Flavoring agents may be classified as natural, artificial, or natural and artificial (N A) by combining the allnatural and synthetic fiavors. Their texture is generally dependent on the solvent within which they are prepared. Fluid extracts may contain a single ingredient or a variety of compounded ingredients.
