Sustainer rocket

Tartar (RIM-24). A US medium-range, supersonic surface-to-air shipboard guided missile system. It provides primary air defense for US Navy destroyers and destroyer escorts and secondary air defense for cruisers. The missile booster and sustainer rockets are combined in a single solid-propint motor, thus facilitating installation on smaller ships... [Pg.526]

The heat peUet used for activation in these batteries is usually a mixture of a reactive metal such as iron or zirconium [7440-67-7] and an oxidant such as potassium perchlorate [7778-74-7]. An electrical or mechanical signal ignites a primer which then ignites the heat peUet which melts the electrolyte. Sufficient heat is given off by the high current to sustain the necessary temperature during the lifetime of the appHcation. Many millions of these batteries have been manufactured for military ordnance as they have been employed in rockets, bombs, missiles, etc. [Pg.537]

Many structures require that a beam sustain a certain force F without deflecting more than a given amount, 8. If, in addition, the beam forms part of a transport system - a plane or rocket, or a train - or something which has to be carried or moved - a rucksack for instance - then it is desirable, also, to minimise the weight. [Pg.70]

Sensitivity and Hazards ofLP. Some mono-proplnts and some well-mixed biproplnts exhibit detonation characteristics typical of Liquid Explosives (See Sects 4 5 of article on Liquid Explosives in this Vol). However, biproplnts usually do not sustain complete detonation, ie, a rather small portion of the biproplnt undergoes something akin to detonation and the remainder deflagrates (Ref 26). Of course even this partial detonation can be very dangerous and destructive. LP are also subject to another phenomenon which is potentially destructive (at least to the rocket), namely combustion instability (Refs 16 22)... [Pg.601]

Rocket propellants are very similar to gun propellants in that they are designed to burn uniformly and smoothly without detonation. Gun propellants, however, burn more rapidly due to the higher operating pressures in the gun barrel. Rocket propellants are required to burn at a chamber pressure of 7 MPa, compared with 400 MPa for gun propellant. Rocket propellants must also burn for a longer time to provide a sustained impulse. [Pg.154]

Commercial amyl nitrate has been used as an ignition accelerator for compression-ignition engine fuels (Ref 3). It also was investigated as a possible monofuel in rocket or ATO engines but found to be unsuitable. Amyl nitrate is capable of decompn on a Ni catalyst but the reaction is barely self-sustaining and. large quantities of soot are deposited which quickly choke the pipes of motors(Ref 4). [Pg.397]

Bombardment. A sustained attack upon a city, fortification or troops in position with bombs, shells, rockets or other missiles. The primary object of bombardment, preliminary to assault, is to destroy the defenses, to destroy or neutralize the weapons of the enemy and to demoralize the troops... [Pg.222]
