The second generation of supply chain professionals acted as the boots on the ground for the expansion of supply chain practices into BRIG (the emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, and China) countries. These characteristics of theory building from case study seem to fit well with the proposed problem stated in this book as the main objective is to develop a framework for assessing and guiding companies progress towards a Demand Driven Supply Chain concept, which is not clearly defined yet in the academic literature and not fully executed in practice by supply chain professionals.

Today, the hospital pharmacist is still mandated to control the supply chain, however there are challenges firom supply chain professionals supported by those who consider medicines to be no different firom any other commodity. Procurement now has to take place in an environment that has more and more budget restraints and external paralysing constraints induced by unwanted dependencies of third party suppliers and sometimes even drug shortages. If the skills are lost, important financial resources would be needed to reactivate lost know-how related to neglected technical equipment or outsourced activities. However, such time is not available in situations such as medicines shortages. Consequently, re-adaption may cost more than ever could have been saved. 

Supply chain professionals in the humanitarian organizations are undervalued and are less likely to be encouraged to develop and to be involved in key decisions. 

The majority of supply chain professionals perform well in their functional roles. At the same time, many of these professionals find it difficult to see the company s larger goals or to see how their actions affect other functional areas. Furthermore, supply chain professionals fail to see how their decisions or actions connect to and affect the financial goals and objectives of the firm. Pointing this out is not to degrade supply chain professionals they are measured by operational performance metrics, which, by all accounts, are plastered on most shop walls. If you have a conversation with the finance department or on Wall Street, you will hear different views of what value means. The definition of value from a finance person would include, of course, money. Within this book, we will begin to understand different perspectives on what value means and show how supply chain management and operations affect an organization s financial performance. In the next chapter, we will discuss the monetary value of a firm in greater depth, but for now, taken together, firm value includes ROIC, growth rate, and cost of capital. Based on previous restrictions on the marketing and use of chemicals under Directive 76/769, a set of recommendations could be detailed in TGDs or as an official European Commission recommendation. What the project must achieve is total security of production, public education (particularly health professionals), security of supply chain, effective monitoring and keeping features updated.

The example provided earlier in the book (Figure 1.11) described the supply chain for a medical device manufacturer. In that example, products flow from the manufacturer to a distributor to a health care provider to a health care professional and finally to the patient. Supply chain discussions started as holistic, but over time they have morphed into a discussion of trucks and sheds becoming more centered on the physical movement of goods. We lost our way. .. the procurement professional should not just "buy." Instead, they need to know how materials fit into the total supply chain to drive value. Too few know how to do this.
