Distribution locations are included in the company-internal value chain network, if distribution volumes and values are under the control and in the books of the company independent if the warehousing and transportation is outsourced to 3PL distribution companies or not. Therefore, a company value chain network is enclosed with a central control of all volume and value information for the respective network and clear interfaces to customers and suppliers out of the network. While the internal value chain network is focused on material flows evaluated with respective internal costs, dedicated interfaces to multiple suppliers and multiple customers are characterized by material flows, financial flows and mutual instead of one-directional exchange of information as proposed for supply chains by several authors.

Figure 22.5 shows how product, customer, and market characteristics can determine different SCM strategies and design implications. For example, the strategic choice to serve niche customers with high price specialty chemicals is only tenable if the high-value inventory is centralized to reduce costs, and if a fast, responsive supply chain is set up to fill customer orders within the requested lead time from central inventory.

Validation needs to be completed for those systems that would support any product recall activities. Regulatory authorities expect that traceability is established throughout the supply chain to facilitate the recall of an entire lot/batch of a product if this becomes necessary to minimize, among other things, any adverse impact on patient safety. One approach for the seamless support of the entire supply chain of a company are so-called ERP systems (enterprise resource planning) [811]. The basic idea of an ERP system is that of a centralized database, which stores company-wide all relevant data concerning the business processes. This approach fails, because a monolithic ERP system cannot fulfill all conceivable requirements in general [817]. Nowadays, a typical company uses on average 50 different, mission-critical applications for the support of its business processes, as empirical studies have shown [830]. Furthermore, for economic reasons it is not feasible to replace these legacy systems by new applications [973]. 

IPPC addresses the effects of pollution once a manufacturing process has been carried out. However, sustainable development also needs to address the control of substances in the overall supply chain. These are both the substances that are used as raw materials for the manufacture of other substances and the resulting products themselves. Controlling the input and use of chemicals in the environment is a central theme of a holistic view of sustainable development and has key implications for the social aspects of sustainable development.

Merchandise is not cost neutral when it arrives in the stores. The expense associated with unloading, unpacking, and storing the merchandise is considerable. Retailers have aggressively tried to minimize the amount of effort required once the merchandise enters the back room. Five years ago, it was common for central distribution facilities to receive the merchandise, unpack it, tag or bar code it, repack it, and ship to stores. Laiger retailers have tried to shift many of these functions back up the supply chain to the manufacturer and demand that merchandise be priced, tagged, and packed for individual stores. However, not till suppliers are advtmced enough to accomplish these simple tasks. For example, 20% of Saks 12,000 suppliers ace unable to accomplish these back room functions. In about 25% of these cases, the ability of Saks to process products is hindered.
