The polymerization process of cyanoacrylates is so fast that it can react with the water present on skin, causing it to bond skin instantly. As such, it should be handled with extreme care, because a small amount rubbed in the eye can instantly bond eyelids shut. It causes irritation of the nose, throat, and lungs from the noxious vapors of the acrylate monomer. There are different commercially available chemical variants that have slightly different setting properties and viscosities depending upon the application. [Pg.166]

One class of adhesives known as superglues consists of synthetic organic polymers that provide strong and rapid adhesion. These adhesives are unusual in that the polymerization process to form the adhesive occurs upon exposure of the monomer to water. Under most conditions, atmospheric moisture is sufficient to form a strong adhesive. Supeiglues stick to a variety of surfaces since a film of moisture exists on almost any surface. With two stabilizing groups on the carbon radical, polymerization becomes even easier. A famous example is SuperGlue , which is methyl 2-cyanoacrylate.
