Corrosion fatigue is a type of failure (cracking) which occurs when a metal component is subjected to cyclic stress in a corrosive medium. In many cases, relatively mild environments (e.g., atmospheric moisture) can greatly enhance fatigue cracking without producing visible corrosion. [Pg.2732]

Freshly distilled ethyl formate must be used. Commercial ethyl formate may be purified as follows. Allow the ethyl formate to stand for 1 hour with 16 per cent, of its weight of anhydrous potassium carbonate with occasional shaking. Decant the ester into a dry flask containing a little fresh anhydrous potassium carbonate and allow to stand for a further hour. A wide variety of capsules loaded with water-immiscible or water-iasoluble materials have been prepared by complex coacervation. Capsule size typically ranges from 20—1000 p.m, but capsules outside this range can be prepared. Core contents usually are 80—95 wt %. Complex coacervation processes are adversely affected by active agents that have finite water solubiUty, are surface-active, or are unstable at pH values of 4.0—5.0. Shipment and Storage. 2-Pyrrohdinone is available in steel dmms and in aluminum or stainless-steel tank cars and tank trailers. Because of its high freezing point, bulk shipments are in tanks with heating coils. Heating with hot water rather than steam avoids product discoloration. Steel (qv), stainless steel, and aluminum are satisfactory materials for storage containers. Because 2-pyrrohdinone is hygroscopic, it must be protected from atmospheric moisture. [Pg.361]

A solution of sulfur trioxide [7446-11-9] dissolved in chlorosulfonic acid [7990-94-5] CISO H, has been used as a smoke (U.S. designation FS) but it is not a U.S. standard agent (see Chlorosulfuric acid Sulfuric acid and sulfur trioxide). When FS is atomized in air, the sulfur trioxide evaporates from the small droplets and reacts with atmospheric moisture to form sulfuric acid vapor. This vapor condenses into minute droplets that form a dense white cloud. FS produces its effect almost instantaneously upon mechanical atomization into the atmosphere, except at very low temperatures. At such temperatures, the small amount of moisture normally present in the atmosphere, requires that FS be thermally generated with the addition of steam to be effective. FS can be used as a fill for artillery and mortar shells and bombs and can be effectively dispersed from low performance aircraft spray tanks. FS is both corrosive and toxic in the presence of moisture, which imposes limitations on its storage, handling, and use. [Pg.402]

As a therapeutic agent, ch oline is adininistered orally in the form of symps or elixers containing the chloride, citrates or bitartrate, or in the form of compressed tablets or capsules of the dihydrogen citrate. Choline is also given in small doses as a nutritional supplement in combination with a variety of other materials.
