Loeomotor aetivity has historically been used as an index of psychostimulant effects. Simple assessment of amount of loeomotor activity can provide the basis for anatomical as well as pharmaeologieal analysis of the neural substrates that mediate the behavioral expression of stimulant action. Many of the tests described involve physical properties such as refractive index, viscosity or melting point of the fat, of the fatty acids or of the lead salts of the fatty acids. However, there were also many chemical tests such as Reichert, Polenske, iodine, saponification and acetyl values. These all gave information as to the composition of the fat, some information as to fatty acid composition, others as to other non-glyceride components of the fat. Thus the iodine value is a measure of unsaturated fatty acids in the fat, now obtainable in more detail from a fatty acid profile. Similarly the Reichert value is a measure of volatile fatty acids soluble in water. For most purposes this means butyric acid, and so the modem equivalent is the determination of butyric acid in the oil. The modem method for milk-fat analysis is thus carrying out the analysis in a similar way to the Reichert determination, but uses a technique that is less dependent on the exact conditions of the analysis and is thus less likely to be subject to operator error. The Reichert value could be useful, in theory, even if milk fat was not present. Lewkowitsch notes that some other oils do give high values. Porpoise jaw oil has a value almost twice that of milk fat, while some other oils also have significant values. It is unlikely that one would have come across much porpoise jaw oil even in 1904, and even less likely today. [Pg.3]

In Direct methods, the intensities are extracted from an indexed powder diffraction pattern by profile fitting procedures such as the Le Bail method and Pawley method. Then the integrated intensities obtained are corrected for Torentz polarization and normalized. These corrected intensity values are then subjected to routine Direct-method procedures. The structural model obtained is completed using difference Fourier maps. This method works successfully when a sufficient number of intensities could be extracted from the powder diffraction pattern. [Pg.6433]

The Institute of Scientific Information (ISI, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) operates a computer-based weekly service called ASCA (Automatic Subject Citation Alert). Articles from prime scientific journals may be located through cited item terms as well as through title terms. Clusters of articles with common references will usually be about the same subject, so a reference used as a profile term will locate articles citing that reference, as articles are published. XRD was performed on the compaction surface, cross section and crushed powder of the specimen. The XRD profiles shown in Fig. 14.15(b) reveal the (200) reflection that does not appear in the pristine Cgo phase. The relatively strong intensity of the (220) reflection may be due to the <110> preferred orientation along the compact direction, probably caused by the (111) <110> slip system that allows considerable deformation of the Cgo crystals. The XRD chart in Fig. 14.15(b) indicates that the matrix phase can be indexed as the fee structure with a lattice constant a = 1.31 nm. The lattice constant decreases by approximately 8% relative to that of the pristine Cgo (a = 1.42 nm) and is approximately equal to the minimum value (a 1.32nm) reported by Takahashi et al. In this specimen, an endothermic peak at approximately 563 K has been confirmed by differential thermal analysis. These results suggest that the h-Cgo phase, a Cgo phase that is subjected to high pressure, can be regarded as a polymerised Cgo phase. [Pg.373]
