Journal titles

Polymer journals are very plentiful and most of them are relatively broad in coverage. Examples - Polymer the international journal for the science and technology of polymers). Information was gleaned from each original publication except where an additional reference to Chemical Abstracts is included. Each citation of a Russian journal or Angewandte Chemie refers to the original Russian or German version, not to any subsequent English translation. Abbreviations for journal titles are those recommended in the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (1994) and quarterly supplements. 

When a journal is available both in Russian and in English, the page numbers of each article are, of course, different. The language of the journal title indicates whether the page number cited is to be found in the Russian or in the English version. 

Further steps toward universality are taken by the replacement of element and compound names wherever possible by symbols and formulas, and by adding to data in older units their recalculated SI equivalents. The usefulness of the reference sections has been increased by giving journal-title abbreviations according to the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index, by listing in each reference all of its authors and by accompanying references to patents and journals that may be difficult to access by their Chemical... 

The entries of this index were derived directly by computer program from the lists of references. The accuracy of the references was the sole responsibility of the authors. No editorial check, except for format and journal-title abbreviation, was applied. Consequently, errors occurring in authors names in the references will recur in this index.

This abbreviated list of papers highlights one of the problems for astrochemists the results important to the subject are scattered around the literature of many disciplines. The way forward is to consult some of the review papers and follow the literature trails, so I have collected some of the papers with a broader perspective of the subject but this is certainly not complete. The references are given in the format of author, date title, journal title, volume and page number.

Periodical references must include the author names, abbreviated journal title, year of publication, volume number (if any), and initial page of cited article (the complete span is better). 

Sometimes journal names change. Authors should use the abbreviation of the journal title that was in use at the time the article was published. CASSI lists the journal titles and the range of years during which the title was being used. 

In journal format, the series title is used as a journal title, abbreviated according to CASSI and italicized, and the series number is used as a journal volume number.

Augmenting the CD version of CASSl is the CAS Source Index (CASSl) Search Tool (http //cassi. cas.org/search.jsp). Available from January 2010, the CASSl search tool is a free, web-based resource that can be used to quickly identify or confirm journal titles and abbreviations for publications indexed by CAS since 1907, including serial and non-serial scientific and technical publications. 

These are published weekly, and they list the titles of almost all biochemical papers published in scientific journals Current Contents is published in paper and diskette versions, and Reference Update as a diskette. In the diskette version, the abstracts of papers can also be viewed, if available. The diskette versions also allow literature searches to be carried out using keywords, combinations of keywords, authors and journal titles in a similar way to MEDLINE searches.
