Structure of the thesis

There are several terms concerning road safety issues and their applications. It is not possible to give a precise definition of all the terms used in the following chapters. This would run to many pages and discussions. It may be useful for now to go briefly through the key terms that are frequently used and differences from one study to another. Readers should bear in mind that the meaning of each term depends on the context and the subject of discussion. 

In this thesis, the term Road Safety is often used instead of Traffic Safety because this thesis focuses on road traffic safefy only including road user safety and vehicle safety. The term Traffic Safety is a general term and could refer to the safety of all traffic modes air traffic, sea, rail and road. 

Some studies are not comfortable with the term accidents that describes road safety problems as accidents that happen by random chance. They prefer to use the term crash instead of accidents. In this thesis, as accidents is a popular term and widely 

I used the term aggregated data to describe the group of data from a macro and national level e.g. number of injuries in the country, whereas disaggregated data refers to detailed information and smaller groups from a micro and local level e.g. number of injuries by age and transport mode. 

The term composite index is used throughout this thesis to mean the combination of several indicators. The indicator itself is a measure derived from variables. In this study the indicator is not any measure and it is normally used to show the level of performance in the country. The indicator can be presented as an average or accident rate. The term risk better emphasises the accident rate.

Throughout this thesis, all methods and techniques described are illustrated by small-scaled examples or case studies based on real-world data. In Chapter 4, a complex case study inspired by a cooperation project with a chemical company is presented, integrating the very most of the aforementioned methods. Figure 1.1 shows a graphical overview on the structure of the thesis and the associated examples. 

The purpose of this chapter is to briefly present the outline of this thesis as well as explaining the reasons why this study is of interest. A brief description of the concept of Road Safety Development Index (RSDI) is given and the aim of the study is highlighted. In addition, this chapter outlines the structure of the thesis. 

The research project e osed in die work in hand thematizes the value determination of supply chain initiatives. The main objective is the development of a quantification approach that will support decision-making regarding the question of whether to implement a supply chain initiative. Giapter 1 indicates the relevance of value determination of supply chain initiatives (Chapter 1.1) and outlines the objectives of the research (Chapter 1.2). Thereafter a scientific-theoretical positioning of the research is given in Chapter 1.3 to facilitate the understanding of the research project and the contribution of the generated results. The section closes with an outline of the structure of the thesis (Chapter 1.4),...

The central thesis of the theory of the non-steady combustion of powders and explosives developed by Ya.B. in this article is the assumption of rapid readjustability of the gas phase of combustion compared to thermal changes in the condensed phase, which allows us to consider the gas phase as quasi-steady. This fundamental property of burning condensed materials allows us not only to significantly simplify the solution of the problem by reducing it to an analysis of the non-steady temperature distribution in the surface layer of the condensed material, but also not to carry out a detailed analysis of the complex structure of the combustion zone above the material (the multi-stage character of the chemical transformation, thermal decomposition, and gasification of the dispersed particles of condensed material and other processes). 

Microinjection was found to be difficult due to the soft structure of the surface tegument. Tests with adults and sporocysts demonstrated the potential of microinjection using selected dyes, which diffused through the body after treatment (L. Gohr, Dusseldorf, 1995, PhD thesis at the University of Dusseldorf Wippersteg, unpublished). However, only a very low number of individuals could be successfully manipulated within 1 day, and most of these did not survive in culture afterwards.

The main part of the book is concerned with the post-war work on Lamb shifts. The theoretical chapter is intended for non-specialists, but workers in the field may find it useful to have the formulae collected together with a consistent notation. On the experimental side, techniques have been so diverse that to have described them all in detail would have been to risk losing the thread of the thesis. I have aimed to explain the principles of the experiments, except in the case of hyperfine structures where I have used measurements without describing their experimental basis.
