Sterculia urens

Gum Karaya. Gum karaya [19000-36-61] or sterculia gum is the dried exudate of the Sterculia urens tree, which is now cultivated in India, the primary producing area. The best quahty gum is collected by tapping the trees during the period April to June with a second collection of lower quahty product later in the year. The gum is allowed to dry on the trees, and the cmde gum is collected and sorted according to color and purity. It is further sorted and processed to powdered gum karaya in the country of use. The quahty of supphes varies greatly (43). [Pg.434]

The characterization of these oligosaccharides as products of the partial hydrolysis of the four gums, together with the identification of largely the same cleavage products from the methylated polysaccharides,39,133,137 established the close structural similarity between the polysaccharides. PS from terrestrial plants have also been reported as anti-CMV agents. For example, PS from three plant species, Astragalus brachycentrus D. C., Astragalus echidnaeformis Sirjaev and Sterculia urens Roxb., which are devoid of in vitro antiviral activity, were evaluated in mouse models of murine CMV infections [109], Treatment with the compounds needed to be started one day prior to virus inoculation for maximum protective benefit. Treatments starting after virus inoculation were ineffective. The mannose-specific plant PS from the orchid species Cymbidium hybrid Cym., Epipactis helleborine (L) Crantz. and Listera ovata (L.) R.Br. Svenska are potent and selective inhibitors of human CMV in vitro [110], They presumably interact at the level of virion fusion with the target cell. [Pg.405]

This paper reviews the literature on gum karaya (from Sterculia urens) and describes the varied applications of the gum in industry—as a food stabilizer, meat binder, bulk laxative, denture powder, and textile size. Cum karaya and related Sterculia gums have been investigated by partition chromatography. Cum karaya is an acetylated polysaccharide of high molecular weight, its relative insolubility, viscosity characteristics, swelling properties, and the effect of particle size on solution characteristics are reviewed. [Pg.33]
