Steel atmospheric corrosion

In atmospheric exposure 18% Ni maraging steel corrodes in a uniform manner , and becomes completely rust covered. Pit depths tend to be more shallow than for the low-alloy high-strength steels. Atmospheric corrosion rates in industrial (Bayonne, New Jersey) and marine (Kute Beach, North Carolina) atmospheres are compared with those for low-alloy steel in Figs. 3.29, 3.30 and 3.31. The corrosion rates drop substantially after the first year or two and in all cases the rates for maraging steel are about half the corrosion rate for HY80 and AISI 4340 steels. [Pg.565]

Tin—Nickel. AHoy deposits having 65% fin have been commercially plated siace about 1951 (135). The 65% fin alloy exhibits good resistance to chemical attack, staining, and atmospheric corrosion, especially when plated copper or bron2e undercoats are used. This alloy has a low coefficient of friction. Deposits are solderable, hard (650—710 HV ), act as etch resists, and find use ia pfinted circuit boards, watch parts, and as a substitute for chromium ia some apphcafions. The rose-pink color of 65% fin is attractive. In marine exposure, tin—nickel is about equal to nickel—chromium deposits, but has been found to be superior ia some iadustfial exposure sites. Chromium topcoats iacrease the protection further. Tia-nickel deposits are bfitde and difficult to strip from steel. Temperature of deposits should be kept below 300°C. [Pg.164]

It is agreed generally that the characteristics of the rust films that form on steels determine their resistance to atmospheric corrosion. The rust films that form on low-aUoy steels are more protec tive than those that form on unalloyed steel. [Pg.2422]

With some important exceptions, gray-iron castings generally have corrosion resistance similar to that of carbon steel. They do resist atmospheric corrosion as well as attack by natural or neutral waters and neutral soils. However, dilute acids and acid-salt solutions will attack this material. [Pg.2443]

It should be made clear that all the rates of rusting in the atmosphere just quoted, relate to average general penetration and take no account of pitting. Serious pitting of steel exposed to atmospheric corrosion is uncomm.on on simple test plates, but it may be necessary to allow for this in some practical cases, where local attack may be occasioned by faulty design and other factors. [Pg.497]

The reason for the use of zinc as a power-impressed rather than a sacrificial anode is that the high concrete resistivity limits the current output, and a higher driving voltage than that provided by the e.m.f. between zinc and steel in concrete is used to provide the necessary current output. No cementitious overlay is required, although it may be advisable to paint the top surface of the sprayed zinc to prevent atmospheric corrosion of the zinc anode. [Pg.193]

In principle, cathodic protection can be used for a variety of applications where a metal is immersed in an aqueous solution of an electrolyte, which can range from relatively pure water to soils and to dilute solutions of acids. Whether the method is applicable will depend on many factors and, in particular, economics — protection of steel immersed in a highly acid solution is theoretically feasible but too costly to be practicable. It should be emphasised that as the method is electrochemical both the structure to be protected and the anode used for protection must be in both metallic and electrolytic contact. Cathodic protection cannot therefore be applied for controlling atmospheric corrosion, since it is not feasible to immerse an anode in a thin condensed film of moisture or in droplets of rain water. [Pg.199]

Paint for structural steelwork is required mainly to prevent corrosion in the presence of moisture. In an industrial atmosphere this moisture may carry acids and in a marine atmosphere this moisture may carry chlorides. Paint is therefore required to prevent contact between steel and corrosive electrolytes, and to stifle corrosion, should it arise as a result of mechanical damage or breakdown of the coating through age and exposure. [Pg.637]

A wide range of paints and other organic coatings is used for the protection of mild steel structures. Paints are used mainly for protection from atmospheric corrosion. Special chemically resistant paints have been developed for use on chemical process equipment. Chlorinated rubber paints and epoxy-based paints are used. In the application of paints and other coatings, good surface preparation is essential to ensure good adhesion of the paint film or coating. [Pg.305]
